Was ihr unternehmen werdet

Part I: Spanish/Puerto Rican Culture.
Join us at Museo de los Santos for a chat about the traditional folk art of 'santos' carvings. Dr. José G. Torres Melendez, M.D., Ph.D. will explain the history & cultural importance of santos as they evolved from Spanish/Catholic spiritual icons to symbols of Puerto Rican history, tradition, cultural nationalism & post-colonial identity.
Note: the SANTOS in our museum are different from 'santeria' which an Afro-Caribbean spirituality & not the focus of our museum.
The museum chat takes about 45 minutes.
Part II: Puerto Rican/African/Taino (indigenous Puerto Rican) Music.
We'll walk around the corner to La Terraza de Bonanza which hosts Bomba & Plena music every Monday night. From this point on, you are on your own. Drinks are cheap. Crowd is young. Experience is unique!
The night starts with Plena music with improvised lyrics and then changes to Bomba where the base rhythm is played by drums accompanied by other instruments (much like a jazz pick-up band but the focus is percussion).
If we're lucky, you'll also see Bomba dancers - who act as the 'conductor' of the musicians & lead drummer or 'Tio' who anticipates the rhythm and steps of the dancer.
A good Bomba dance is like a competition, where the dancer will use body language/motion to trick the musicians & the crowd roars approval.
The music ends about midnight

I'm an AirBnb Superhost and president of Museo de los Santos which is located in the same historic house as my AirBnb suites. Living in Santurce for more than 20 years, I have seen the neighborhood emerge as the leading Arts District in Puerto Rico with more cultural entities than anywhere in the Caribbean. Working as a consultant for hotels & tourism I have helped locals and visitors learn from each other throughout Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Such an interesting and unique collection. Loved hearing about how they were acquired, also. Would love to return and see them exhibited in the new location.

Between Richard and Billy's vast knowledge of Santos and the incredible music at Bonanza, this is a must do experience. It was a truly phenomenal night!

Richard and Billy have an incredible collection of Puerto Rican and Spanish Santos. They're both very knowledgable about the subject. Their hospitality was warm and inviting. The Bomba/Plena music was fun!

Wonderful experience! The museum visit was so interesting and Richard shared so much about the history of the carved statues. The Bomba music and dancing after was great fun and an amazing experience.

I enjoyed the thorough storytelling, history lesson of P.R. and the Santos. Being a lover of music, I truly immersed myself at Bonanza. The Plena and Bomba music sealed the deal with this experience!

The people were nice enough, but the title should be changed to more correctly express what people are learning/paying. The information about the Santos comes from a Spaniard point of view and how such introductions of Spanish colonization was interpreted and carried by certain populations on the island. Truly, the Puerto Rican culture is about its fixture of Spanish, Taino, and African culture. This event mainly focused on the Spanish side and talked little about the Taino influence and talked nothing about the African influence. Therefore, erasing vital aspect of the culture and how the santos are view by all. This event is about how the Catholic Church and Spanish descendants view the santos. This experience was truly disappointing and I feel bad for the tourist that do not know any better and go expecting a true immersion of what the santos mean whole heartily. In my advice, the information they gave could be googled and you could take your money to the bar bonanzas on a Monday night and have an authentic experience of what is like to be Puerto Rican and the how the Spanish, Taino, and African culture define what being boricua or Puerto Rican is. I respect the education the patrons but it’s not a full spectrum. I, too, have study many aspects of the culture for I am part of it and as a scholar, this ain’t it.
