New to 2020! Sunset/Lunar Tours (featured during New and Full Moon phases). Look for the afternoon times on the calendar.
Your 3-hour boat tour begins on the Beaufort Waterfront and ventures into remote areas of the Rachel Carson Reserve not accessible by the local ferry operators. You'll observe dolphins, turtles, shorebirds, and wild horses during your transit along the shores and tidal creeks of the Reserve. I'll guide your exploration of the natural history, flora, and fauna as we journey through tidal flats & stroll along sandy beaches and upland growth of maritime forests. You'll learn about the horse history of the Reserve's most famous residents and observe these equine marvels feeding and interacting along the edges of tidal marsh. We'll also observe osprey, eagles, & shorebirds that feed and gather in this pristine ecosystem and explore the vital role Rachel Carson played in their survival. Located along the Atlantic Flyway, the Reserve provides a resting & refueling point for numerous migratory birds. You'll have ample opportunities to capture nature with your camera & collect seashells cast ashore during the last tide. I'll also provide an overview of what we're learning from the various research projects being conducted in the Reserve.

My husband and I really enjoyed the tour. Even with the light rain, the tour was memorable and Mirism was very knowledgeable and took us to places we never would have been able to explore or see using a ferry service. The icing on the cake was at the end of ourtour being able to see the "locals" up close! Definitely a trip I would recommend!

This tour was the absolute highlight of our weekend in Beaufort! Miriam was knowledgeable and committed to the reserve. It definitely felt like a once-in-a-lifetime chance to walk on recently formed new sand shoals, see the feral horses, and enjoy the sunshine and the view from her small boat.

Miriam's tour was the highlight of our long weekend in Beaufort. She is engaging, deeply informed, and able to seamlessly adjust her language and presentation to meet different baselines of knowledge. We both asked a bunch of questions, and we never once felt silly or judged for what we didn't know. We were thrilled to get to see the horses and a pair of dolphins at pretty close range, which I can only assume is easier when you're in a small boat and such a small group, and we collected more large, unfractured shells in about fifteen minutes than we did over the course of a few hours at Atlantic Beach. If this is the kind of activity that you might enjoy, you should definitely book Miriam's tour!

Amazing experience! So worth the price. Completely unique experience. Miriam is so passionate and so knowledgeable. We got up close and personal with horses, birds, and dolphins! This is far more extensive than any boat tour I’ve done in the area. We learned a lot about the preserve and the wildlife and vegetation. Miriam had an answer for every single question about what we saw. She also knows all about Beaufort. She also seemed to genuinely care about our experience and brought along hot cocoa. I asked if she could do this at the beginning of February and even though it was cold with the wind blowing, she told us to bundle up ahead of time, so we felt toasty and enjoyed the ride. We really felt we got away from our busy lives. It was beautiful. Would recommend highly.

This tour is fantastic and a must for anyone interested in the outer banks, why they exist, how storms affect the islands, what they do and the ecosystem on them. Her knowledge of the subject was very deep coming from a background in teaching science to High School Students and having lived here for many years. She even goes out on the islands and helps care for the animals and cleans the beach. She will take you on several beach landings and teach you about that area and answer any questions you have. We asked many questions about the environment and animals and she was spot on with them all. At the end of the tour she went above and beyond to make sure we got everything out of the tour we wanted even though it added more time to the trip. She made sure we saw everything. I would HIGHLY recommend this trip to anyone but especially anyone interested in the environment and any students old enough to understand the complexities of the ecosystems of the outer banks.
