Comfortable, spacious room for you to feel at home awaits! Built in 1911, our home offers old world charm with modern feel. You are invited to enjoy practically the whole house, especially our favorite room, the kitchen! You will have off-street parking and your own mini-fridge. It's just a short walk/bike/drive to wonderful places around St. Paul, to I-94/the Green Line that connects you to Minneapolis, and 4 blocks away is the Nice Ride bike-sharing station.
The house was originally built in 1911, and like most homes in this area, in the last hundred+ years it has been updated and curated to fit the needs and tastes of its owners. When we first bought the house, Hannah and I fell in love with the character of the aged oak woodwork, nine foot ceilings, antique radiators, and well-loved original Hardrock Maple floors. Unlike many older homes though, Capitol Heights has been updated with a more modern, flowing floor-plan that creates cozy nooks inside sweeping spaces. During the spring/summer months, enjoy the weather Minnesotans live for as you drink your tea or coffee on the back patio, second floor deck, or covered front porch! When there is garden produce, feel free to pick what's ripe! When you're here, you're not just renting a room, practically the whole house is yours to call home. We don't need to be the only place you stay in your travels, just the best place you stay.

You'll have a queen-sized bed in a private bedroom (14'x14') upstairs, next to which is the shared full bath. The bedroom space can also hold the full-sized air mattress should each of you like your own bed. Please let us know in advance if you would like the air mattress set up!
You will have access to the whole ground floor, which includes a shared half-bath, spacious living room, elegant dining room, and large modern kitchen. In the kitchen, the dishes, cooking equipment, and tea/coffee items are at your disposal and you have a your own mini-refrigerator stocked with water, soda, eggs, cereal, and milk. The front and back porches and back deck are available for lounging and seasonally there will be a garden for puttering around in - as things are harvested they may be available for your use as well! Complimentary laundry machines are available in den upstairs.
There is free off-street parking in our driveway which is just to the left of the house as well as locked and covered storage for your bicycle.
From time to time we do have our friends and family over, but anyone who comes understands how Airbnb works and your privacy will be respected!

We are happy to spend as little or as much time with you as you like around our other commitments! If we are working in a common area and you need something, please don't hesitate to let us know. You will be sharing the home with just the two of us but from time to time we may have family or friends pop by. They know we are hosting and are respectful of your space as well. Should you need to monopolize the use of the kitchen to make a big meal or the living room to play a board game, just give us a heads up! We are very flexible and want to make your stay the best possible.

Since our home was built in the early 1900s, the stairs leading up to your second floor room are a bit steeper than in modern homes.
The nearby T-intersection of Como Ave and Capitol Heights is tricky: it doesn't have any stop signs, and from only two directions are there Yield signs. Please drive defensively.
We are in the city, so you will hear car horns and other street noise sporadically through the day, though you don't need to worry about being kept awake at night since it's pretty quiet outside by 9PM.
Let us know at least a day in advance a 1-hour window between 3pm-10pm when you'll be checking in so we can be sure to be there to let you in.
Be respectful of the neighbors

Together, we spend our free time gardening, cooking, sampling local craft beers, working and volunteering with students. Richard likes to read science fiction and Hannah's pretty darn good at calligraphy. British and historical movies and shows dominate our TV time but Richard has gotten Hannah to enjoy Marvel and the occasional science fiction genre. We both grew up with families who did a lot of road trips so the big trips in our 3 years of marriage have been road trips in Canada, the West/Pacific Northwest, and the East Coast. Before we were married, Hannah had lots of European travel experiences. Richard's father was in the Air Force which gave him opportunity to live all over the United States and Australia. We love exploring new cultures and cuisines and meeting new people!
