Very-well-equipped two-bedroom cottage in Volcano Village, Hawai'i, in the upland rainforest at cool 3850-foot elevation. Full kitchen for meal prep, all linens, heated rooms, cable TV, wireless HS internet. Your hosts are your neighbors and guides.

Der Wohnraum

Kahi Malu has been renovated over the years since 2000, with a different project almost every year. One thing we haven't changed is the beautiful hardwood floor. We provide house slippers for bare feet (guests are asked to remove shoes at the entry door, Hawai'i-style); slippers are disinfected between uses! Besides the various breakfast foods in the well-equipped kitchen, there are also supplies (paper products, first-aid items, electric hair dryer, shampoos & conditioners) in the bathroom, besides all bath and hand towels and washcloths. Our guests have felt at home in Kahi Malu for sixteen years; many have returned numerous times. Our guests have taught us how to be better hosts, including making suggestions for items they'd like to have provided for their use.

Zugang für Gäste

Kahi Malu is a free-standing, spacious two-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage, with a living area and dining area and full, galley-style kitchen, plus a covered front porch and a large covered lanai, which has benches and a table, plus a sling armchair and a sofa. Guests who reserve Kahi Malu have the entire cottage to themselves.

Interaktion mit Gästen

Host will e-mail lots of information about the cottage, Volcano Village, HVNP, and the island, then, after you arrive, host will meet you at the cottage and give you a tour of that, and share information (maps, DVDs, books, and verbal presentation) about the Park.

Weitere wichtige Infos

Kahi Malu is in the village of Volcano, on the "Big Island" of Hawai'i, about twenty-six miles from the town of Hilo, on the east, Windward side of the island. The village roads are almost all paved. There are seven eateries in Volcano, now, for various dining-out options; there is also a farmers' market at the community center in the village on Sundays. Kahi Malu has its own parking space, near the cottage. There is a laundry room, behind Kahi Malu, which guests are welcome to use in the afternoons or evenings.

Our guests have almost always come to stay in Volcano, because they are here to explore HVNP and perhaps the black-sand beach and green-sand beach, among other places. They do not come to have parties, so, we have never had to explain that our quiet neighborhood appreciates peace and quiet; they have understood that, without rules being imposed.
Two rules:
• No pets
• No smoking inside the cottage (only on the covered porch or lanai, where the breeze will blow away the smoke); place butts in outside container

Kathryn is a wonderful Airbnb host. Her communication ahead of the trip on important details like market locations and local attractions was fantastic. She was one of the most hospitable Airbnb hosts I've ever come across and I recommend her place highly if you're looking to stay in Volcano. The very short drive to the National Park and close proximity to a great Thai food truck can't be beat.

I booked this cottage for our party of 4 active adults; 2 of us live in Hawaii and had previously visited Volcano, most recently in 2014. Kathryn responded quickly to my queries with accurate, useful, up-to-date info. Though I knew Volcano, the charming cottage itself was a (good) surprise: koa wood floors, spacious lanai, adequately equipped kitchen (with coffee and cereal, much appreciated), good lighting throughout, gas fireplace, comfortable beds with mattress warmers and ample covers (yes, nights can get chilly at 3,800 ft altitude). The cottage was very clean and struck us as well suited to families. The bathtub is tiny but could be fine for very small bathers. The shower was terrific, with plenty of hot water and the generous-sized bath towels were especially welcome after a long, vigorous hike. Visitors should know that the area, including the cottage, though nestled in the forest, isn't "buggy" (i.e. has no black flies and few, if any, mosquitoes)(URL HIDDEN) Dining options are limited but cover a range from kid-friendly to fine dining. Volcano's 2 general stores carry some groceries, but vegans and those with dairy allergies/sensitivities will need to bring their milk/cheese alternatives or buy them in Kona or Hilo. (Kathryn provided info on markets for both locations.) Fresh fruits and vegetables are also best purchased elsewhere, unless your visit coincides with the Volcano farmers' market. Visiting the national park is the prime objective of most travelers, so be aware that the visitor center is often very crowded. Check out Kathryn's ample supply of books and resources to supplement park info. During our visit (July 5-8), the park ran out of trail maps in English. Luckily, we found one in the cottage's notebook of resources, which we borrowed and returned. Kathryn keeps tabs on Kilauea's ups and downs, and her advice on when to view it (the Jagger Museum overlook is accessible 24/7) was spot on. To sum up, this experience was precisely what we were looking for: a charming cottage, private and secluded yet close to services, at a price we could afford--a great home base from which to visit one of our planet's unique marvels: an active volcano (Nature's lava lamp) up close, in its beautiful island setting.

Wonderful home-base for a week of vacation to see the volcano and even drive around the Big Island. Kathryn is a wealth of knowledge about the area and the most gracious of hostesses. We liked Kathryn so much we just had our 2nd stay and brought the in-laws too!

My family really enjoyed our time at Kahi Malu. The house was equipped with everything that we needed for our time there. We felt relaxed and at home as we enjoyed the tranquil setting and the sounds of the native birds in the rainforest singing. Kate is a gracious host and we appreciated her willingness to share her knowledge of the area with us. We would stay here again!

Kahi Malu was a magical cottage in a setting of ohila-lehua and fern trees. Getting up in the morning to see apapanes and Japanese white-eyes flitting in the trees and watching the family of Kalij pheasants was a delight. We also appreciated Kathryn's recommendations on what to see. Although we didn't have enough time to do everything, we were able to see amazing things that we might have missed without her advice. The lava lake of Halema'uma'u Crater at night (after 10 p.m. was Kathryn's suggestion) and the bike ride from Kalapana to the lava flow were highlights of our trip. The cottage was clean and fully equipped. The kitchen was recently remodeled, and the bathroom was adequate, but not new. There was no central heating, but there were baseboard heaters in the bedrooms and a gas-fired stove in the living room. The beds had heated mattress pads. Kathryn's emails and information binder at the cottage were full of useful information including restaurant menus. We particularly appreciated the headlamps, which were helpful for nighttime volcano viewing.

I have lived in Volcano Village for over thirty-two years, but first came to Volcano in 1953, as a child, and visited Volcano, with my family, every few years, during the Summertime. I moved to Volcano in 1983. We've been offering vacation-rental lodgings, in our own cottages, for just over twenty years.
We host our cottages, making them homes-away-from-home, well equipped and stocked with the less perishable breakfast foods, with movies and documentaries about HVNP on DVD, with books and maps about the island and HVNP. I greet guests, after they check in, and give them a tour of their cottage and tell them about the HVNP and the east side of the island, to maximize their touring opportunities here.
We live across from the cottages' property and are available if guests have questions or requests, but we respect their privacy and do not knock on their cottage door, once they've been greeted and settled in, unless they ask for advice or aid.
