Puffins is a one of a kind house; part of it includes an old train car that was incorporated into it. Otherwise? We love the sun, the skylights inside, how close we are to the beach, the pace, the feeling of calm and days of promise, & fires in the winter.
Note: There is a pet fee of up to £25 for one large dog, or two smaller ones. We love dogs, so don't usually say no! But do mark that on the form you submit asking if you can book, otherwise we have to get Airbnb to add that, which just delays confirming your booking.
Puffins is a lovely place to holiday in a fabulous location 400 metres from the cliff above Trebarwith Strand beach. It is a uniquely designed property which has won awards from RIBA and the Bristol Architecture Centre for architectural and sustainable design when it was built in 2000. It is a compact, relaxing gem of a house that has everything you need for a memorable holiday, set on the rugged North Cornwall coast. Puffins is ideal for 2 couples, or a small family. Please note we accept 4 guests maximum at Puffins, even though there are 3 bedrooms.
In December 2016 a brand new larger bathroom was installed, with a fantastic waterfall shower head, or a lovely bath to soak in.
A compact, but comfortable open-plan living room / kitchen / dining area forms the heart of the property which has access directly on to an enclosed terrace through a full length glass wall, which is also the entrance to the property. This glass wall allows light to flood into the living space, bringing some of the amazing Cornish light inside for you. It also has full length curtains that can be drawn across it for privacy, or a sun awning that can be lowered down for shade.
The main room is lovely and warm with a wood-burning stove for those colder months. Natural light streams into the main corridor beyond through skylights, and through the glass wall and skylight in the main great room. Each bedroom has lovely high window(s) that allow light and privacy. The kitchen has all the usual appliances plus a large fridge freezer, microwave and a washing machine. There is a BBQ on the sunny terrace plus table and chairs for 6 so you can enjoy outdoor meals -- perhaps even fish bought fresh that day. The terrace has a chimenea as well, so you can build a small fire outside to keep you warm during cool Cornish nights.
Puffins consists of the main room, three bedrooms (a main double, a smaller double and a single room; please note the single room is small and there is limited storage in that room) and the bathroom (tub and power shower). On the terrace there is a retractable washing line which is a good place to dry wetsuits / swimsuits too. No expense has been spared -- the main two beds are from Loaf and Warren Evans, and all bed linens are from Loaf, or John Lewis. The furniture throughout is from Loaf, Neptune, French Connection, or a few local boutiques, and is to a high standard. After all, Puffins is our retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world too, so we want to feel pampered there as well.
The house has unlimited wi-fi, a DVD / Blu Ray player, cable, a TV, 2 iPod docks and radios, a Nespresso machine, books, games and all the things that would make a fun holiday for people of all ages. Puffins is ideal for 2-4 people (although there are beds that would allow for 5, please note we allow no more than 4 guests in Puffins, to ensure everyone's comfort.) The 2nd and 3rd bedrooms are connected by a door between them, which allows for extra room for bed 2 if it is two couples, and bedroom three can be used more as a dressing room / extra room to spread your self out in. If you have 2 children, one in the single bed in room 3, and one in the double in room 2 works out well.
As Treknow is a small quiet hamlet just over a mile from Tintagel, cars may easily be parked on the road outside the house where there are no restrictions. In the photos we show where we usually park, which is always available.
From the house it is a 8-10 minute walk down to the beach, via either the Coast Path, or just 1 minute down the road, which is excellent for swimming and surfing, or on the old mining path that was used to take granite in mule carts back and forth from the beach to the quarry. If you have little ones, we suggest taking the car down, and parking in the car parks provided at Trebarwith Strand, as the path isn't flat, and the roads are narrow (single track with passing places)! It’s also an amazing place for walking, or just lazing about and reading or having a picnic.
If you want to go to Tintagel Castle, it is 5 minutes by car to the Castle Car park, then a walk to the entry point, or a 30 minute walk from the house.
For those who enjoy nature beyond the beach, bird watching along the cliffs is excellent and on nearby Davidstow Moor and Bodmin Moor there are some truly beautiful walks. The house has books and maps with information on both.
At the beach is The Port William, called by many ‘the best pub with a view over the sea in Cornwall’. It is a wonderful place to watch the sun going down and serves a wide range of different foods and snacks which are better than standard pub fare. It has both indoor and outdoor seating.
Additionally, in the summer the café next to the beach has fantastic homemade food and good coffee, and next to the Seagull Surf Shop they sell fresh made donuts (and ice cream).
The nearest shops are in Tintagel which is just over one mile away. Boscastle and Port Isaac are also close, where there are lots of different restaurants, pubs and shops. Rock is about a 20 minute drive away, and you can take the ferry across the Camel Estuary to Padstow from there, which is lovely for a day out. You can go sea-fishing and boating from many places near the house.
In Padstow you will find Rick Stein’s restaurants and cafés and his famous fish and chips. Port Issac and Rock also have the famous Nathan Outlaw's restaurants. There are bicycles are for hire in Wadebridge so you can cycle along the Camel trail or anywhere you like - they even have motorised ones if you aren't up for pedalling up and down all the hills, but want to go for a spin with everyone else.
Like a bit more activity on your holiday? Then enjoy surfing at Trebarwith Strand or Polzeath, Tennis at Tintagel tennis courts, golf at St Endoc, skateboarding at the Tintagel Playing Fields, kayaking / coasteering / stand up paddling, cycling riding on the Camel Way, or why not even try some horse riding on the Moors?
There is so much more to do; the best way to find out about it all and experience it is to come to North Cornwall and stay at Puffins. We look forward to welcoming you!

The entire house is yours for the stay; there are two loft spaces built in the top of bedrooms 2 & 3, but we ask that you do not go up there are they are where we keep our personal effects for when we stay. Additionally, our insurance doesn't cover injury to guests if they go to that space, and the old train ladders in the room up to the lofts there are antique, and not made to take much weight. Finally, our cleaners can't go up there, as they are not covered by their insurance. But the rest of the house is yours! Puffins isn't suitable for children under the age of 7-8 years old, so please email if you have any queries.

We live a few hours away, but area always available by phone or email with any questions - from how does something work, to suggestions on what to do. We've even found a dentist on a Saturday night for a guest who had a daughter with a broken tooth! Anything we can do to make you feel more at home, or solve problems, or know more about North Cornwall. We love the area, and are happy to share our knowledge!

The parking at Puffins is on the road just outside the house, but ever since we purchased it several years ago, we've never had a problem, nor have any guests. Rubbish bins are stored in the cupboards next to the stairs up to the patio, and we just ask you put them out on the night noted (Tuesday pick up, so bins out n Monday night please) so they will be picked up and emptied, and not attract any vermin.
Also, if you are staying in cooler months (or use the wood burner in general), please note the following two things (1) if you are staying less than a week, we do not supply wood for the wood burner. There are many places locally to purchase wood and kindling; the Coop in Camelford is easy as it has parking in the back and they always have stock. We suggest buying a local paper for 20p to ball up and help get the firing roaring. We do have firestarters next to the wood burner which you can use. And (2) please clean out the wood burner before you leave; the tools are next to the wood burner, or otherwise the next guests need to do so. Just use the brush and small shovel, and as long as the ashes are cool, sweep them up and put the ashes in the bin. So we all appreciate everyone pitching in there!
PLEASE do email to advise if you have broken a glass, dish, etc. Accidents do happen, but it helps us to know what needs replacing so we can bring it on our next trip down, or send it to our cleaners, if required.
***And do note that to close the curtains over the glass wall, there is a cord on the left side, as you face it (next to the buffet) and please use that - if you try to pull the curtain across (and it has happened) the entire curtain rail breaks and hangs there, which isn't what any of us want!
Change over days from June-August are Saturdays, as well as during half term weeks, or any other weeks that show a minimum 7 day stay. Otherwise, it is a 3 day minimum stay, and you can chose the start date.
THE NEW BATHROOM
As of December 2016, Puffins has a brand new, larger upgraded bathroom. Yeah! It is lovely. However, you just need to know these two bits to ensure you are comfy and it is working right.
There is one switch on the wall next to the sink with a display, just turn that on, and another below it turns the towel rails on, which also heat the bathroom, and within a few minutes you will feel them come up to temperature.
So we don't have the immersion running all the time, and running up the electricity bill, there unit with a display on the wall above the switch for the towel rails that controls the hot water. To get hot water, just do as follows: It works by pressing the boost button once - gives 1 hour-1.5 hours of
hot water, press twice it gives 2-3 hours of hot water. Your emersion will not be on unless this is pressed, so you will not have hot water. If you press boost 3 times, it cancels the request. The water cylinder will keep the water warm, so you don't need to hit it constantly, and it can do a few showers. For 2 people, I'd hit boost once the night before you go to bed if you want to shower in the AM, or hit it once in the morning if you want it for later in the evening. The tank is large, so it can keep a good deal of water warm on it. Don't worry about any other buttons on the digital monitor except the one marked boost. Below that is the fuse switch to turn on the heated towel rails.
We do allow children over 7 to stay; if you have a 6 year old, for example, you can email with questions, but we won't allow children 5 or under to stay.
Puffins is our second home, and we use it frequently, so we ask that you leave it in the same condition you found it in. As it is our second home, we decorated it to a high standard, and didn't go and just buy a load of stuff from Ikea, and put it up for rental hoping to make money. Every year since owning we have done significant improvments to the house, last December it was the all new bathroom, come Nov-Dec this year, it will be new cladding that looks like wood and the colour the house is now, but won't require a full painting every other year from the battering it takes from being right at the coast.
We just love the house, and it makes us sad to think of it being empty, so we decided to start letting it out, and with the exception of one or two bad eggs, it has worked out well. We've put a great deal of effort into it, so we ask that you treat it (and us) with the respect it deserves.
We do allow one or two dogs, depending on size (only one large dog, or two small ones), for a £25 pet fee, per pet. House towels must not be used on the dogs, and the dogs are not allowed on any furniture.
The cleaning fee covers linens, towels, and overall cleaning. However, any dishes, utensils, etc you use do need to be washed and put away before you depart, and the rubbish in the bin needs to be taken to the county tip on your way out (please check first, as out of season the tip isn't open every day, so you can leave rubbish at the house and the cleaners will deal with it). Not doing this may result in part of your security deposit being withheld in the amount equal to the charge our cleaners charge us. If in the summer months, the bins are in the cabinets under the stairs, so you can just put rubbish out then, and the cleaners will take care of it otherwise
No candles, naked flames, etc in the house please - use all your fire making desires on the wood burner or BBQ.
Puffins is a NO SMOKING house. Any smoking found, or scent reported by the cleaners will result in a deposit forfeit, plus incur a £100 fee for the house to be professionally cleaned to remove the smoke smell. This includes smoking on the patio.
House towels are not allowed to be used for the beach.
We suggest leaving the key in the door lock at night, even if locked, to ensure a safe and speedy departure if required.
There is a phone at Puffins, you can use it to make emergency calls, and we provide the number so you can take incoming calls, but it is too difficult to try and track guests down and bill them for calls made while staying, so we ask that you do not use it to make outgoing calls unless it is an emergency, or to call us.
We suggest leaving the key in the key lock box when going out, that way it is harder to lose. The cleaners are the closest to the house with a key, but they won't always be in the area, so you will otherwise incur the cost of a locksmith to re-gain entry to the house. And no one wants to scour a trail or beach looking for a missing key on holiday! We've tried multiple times to get more than one cut, but we can't get it done successfully. Apologies for that! It also helps if we need to get a workman in during the day when you are out, as they will need to access the key as well!
Hi, we are Kristine & Simon, the rather lucky owners of Puffins. We are beach lovers (obviously) and love to come to Puffins to relax, explore and recharge. Even after many years of coming to Cornwall, we are still always finding new things to see and do. Whether it is winter or summer, Puffins is our perfect place, and our proper second home. We hope you will find it as lovely and special as we do. We purchased it in 2013 and have done quite a bit of work to get it to the cosy state it is in, and love it as it is, but every year do another 'project' on it.
Kristine calls Puffins her happy place, and it is truly our second home and we use it frequently. I can read, take walks sit by the sea, walk on the beaches, visit our local pubs...I'm not sure what happens when I get to Puffins, but I instantly relax and feel lighter & happier. Simon does too - although being a keen runner (of marathons) he does crazy runs.
We love to travel & live like a local, and so we share lots of information on the area to help our guests do the same. We can't live without books, music, sport, wine, family & friends and laughter. Our life motto is every second counts, so do what you enjoy, and see and do as much as you can. We're trying, hopefully a stay at Puffins helps you do the same!
