If you are after a memorable East Coast experience, Wendy and Luke’s AirBnB has it all. The accommodation is rustic, real, great value for money and we had the best night’s sleep on our trip around the Coast.
Situated 3km from Mt Hikurangi, on a working sheep and cattle station, the air is fresher here, the scenery more magnificent, the peace and quiet all encompassing.
But most importantly, Luke is a host like no other. He greeted us with warmth and enthusiasm, showed us around, and later took us high into the hills, past grazing sheep and cows, up to a trig, where we could see for hundreds of spectacular miles below us. He pointed out nearby mountains for us to climb, rock faces to scale, and where we could greet the sunrise. His love of this special environment, where he was born, makes being there with him feel like a gift he is sharing.
That evening over a shared dinner and a few beers we listened spellbound as he talked about East Coast Maori culture and history - and his own part in creating local history.
We were sorry to miss meeting Wendy this trip, but left knowing we’d experienced something - and someone - special, and urge anyone with a love of the outdoors and adventure in their soul, to go and stay there too.
