This cabin occupied my dreams for years before I found it. Off the grid, remote, sturdy and beautifully finished. Suspension bridge access, trails, Uncompahgre Wilderness. Waterfalls, wildlife, spectacular views...from bed!
If you cherish wildness.

This cabin occupied my dreams for years before I found it. Off the grid, remote, sturdy and beautifully finished. Suspension bridge access, trails, Uncompahgre Wilderness. Waterfalls, wildlife, spectacular views...from bed!
If you cherish wildness.

Everywhere you look, seams are tight, doors close with a 'thunk' windows seal cleanly. The absence of wifi or cell service is a FEATURE of this place. Silverton and Lake City are 1/2 hour away. Graded roads are rough, but negotiable w/ average rental car. Clearance a plus though.

You have full access. The bridge gate locks to close access. The back 'yard' is the Uncompahgre Wilderness area

I have skied all over this terrain. The cabin has maps and binoculars for orientation. Finishing a day, in the high country of the San Juans, is a sacred and eternal gift of solitude and magnificence; shower, wood stove fire, sunset upon timberline peaks.

There are no neighbors. There is a cabin, down and across the road, invisible from Puente, that is sometimes occupied by a lovely couple from Lake City on weekends. People on jeeps and motorcycles travel this road (Engineer Pass). They find the picturesque setting of the cabin irresistible and stop for photos. I accept their enthusiasm as testimony to the uncommon Beauty and uniqueness of the cabin! Privacy is easy to come by.

The road up is 16 miles of dirt (towards Silverton) I've driven it in a Ford Focus, though a little more clearance would be comforting. There is parking for about 4 vehicles max in front of the bridge. To go over to Silverton, you'll want 4wd, as the road above the house begins to switch back and get rougher. Pick up your supplies in Lake City. There are groceries, rental jeeps and quads in town. Best to be self contained, though the drive up and down is sublime.

The cabin is at 11,500'. If you have experience with altitude, use it. If not, acclimatization is prudent. A nite in Denver, a nite in Gunnison, before your trip up the hill may do much to allay headaches. (I have a Sat phone in the house for any emergencies) Drink water, graduate your exertion, revel in the purity of altitude.

Burning it down would be the worst thing, hence no candles or open flames please. As it it solar powered, wood heated and propane fueled, use conservation as your rule. Water, light and fuel is not to be wasted, though there is plenty for your needs.

First of all, the road up Engineer Pass from Lake City has some spectacular views leading up to the one of kind Puente Cabin. Chris was an amazing host from the start. He greeted us with a smile on his face and showed us around his magnificent Puente Cabin. The Cabin was truly a work of art from the outside in. Wow, it sure was nice an cozy in the cabin. The cabin seals very nicely and only needed to start a fire one evening, just to set the mood. I had dreamed of proposing to my girlfriend at a place very similar to this. That is exactly what I did, SHE SAID YES!!!! Chris went well over our expectations and satisfied our stay in every way we could've imagined. This past weekend was a weekend getaway that will never ever be forgotten. Thank you Chris for making my engagement proposal everything I have ever imagined.

We had a wonderful time at the Puente Cabin! Chris met us to show us around the cabin. It has a magical location and great energy throughout! We hiked everyday from the cabin and engineer pass. One of our favorites was the Horse thief trail back to Horse chief mountain. 360 degrees of stunning mountains. The weather was chilly with snow and winds which made the stove just perfect. We would've to come back again and experience Puente Cabin during the summer! PS-Chris, would love to hear about your other adventures that were portrayed in your photos. Did you summit Everest? :)

We really enjoyed the cabin, thank you so much for sharing it with us. It was very much off the grid, very quiet, and very relaxing. We could get up in the morning and watch the wildlife out the window while having breakfast. Very nice!

We had a great time at Puente cabin. Chris was warm and welcoming, and gave us a thorough orientation. The views from the cabin are truly spectacular, and the surrounding area provides some of the best hiking we have done. All in all, a wonderful few days.

What a special place to call home for a short period. The views are extraordinary, and the location is perfect. We did acclimate at a lower altitude before arriving, which helped us enjoy our visit. Additionally, the cabin served as a great base camp for exploring the Alpine loop. We even got lucky to see meteor showers in the sky, something one can not forget.

If you love the mountains and dream of cabins this place is a true gem. It was everything depicted on Airbnb and more. Chris was easy to coordinate with and met us at the cabin for a brief orientation and to answer any questions we had. The cabin is simple but had everything we needed, in short it was perfect. On the last day, as we packed up to leave, we were already planning when we could come back. Spectacular views. Great basecamp for hiking the area.

A few years back 3 close allies died. After the third, I sold my house, donated my art, books, furniture and gear and moved into an airstream trailer in Baja. I had not another moment to waist. It was the best choice I ever made.
