Kanoko is a brilliantly positioned residence that is very quiet and has a charm due to its position away from neighbours and within a 'jungle'-type surrounding. It is within a reasonable distance of the main attractions on Yakushima, and is a short walking distance from a bus stop (a good way to get around the island), the anbo town (for shopping and some fantastic meals) and a nice coral beach. The father of the family, Kiyomi, is lovely and always willing to help with planning of daily activities and how to achieve them. He does so with great enthusiasm which may be helpful if you are new to the island and are not sure what is best to do and when, or if you are the kind of person that likes some suggestions and direction. Aside from the beautiful house, the room is perfect with comfortable beds and blankets, and an option of air conditioning to keep you warm (I was there in winter!). The shower facilities are also good. In addition to the amazing Japanese breakfast on offer, served around a small traditional fireplace with green tea, you may also be lucky enough to share further meals in a similar fashion and to partake in some interesting mixed language conversation. In short, kanoko provided me a solid base from which I could explore the beautiful island of Yakushima and played a large role in forging some lasting and cherished memories of my (first) time there. I will not soon forget.

I stayed for 3 nights with a Japanese friend of mine, we are both female and live in Tokyo. The location of this place is great for access to hiking, restaurants, bus stop, and walkable beach. Setsuko-san is a wonderful host who helped us with logistics, cooked great breakfasts and was gracious and accommodating throughout our stay. Her husband Kiyomi is a wealth of knowledge about the island and eager to take guests sightseeing and share his passion for the area. However, he was a bit overbearing at times bordering on rude. For example, after recommending a restaurant to us and driving us there (which was very helpful and nice) he showed up during our meal, sat down and started talking with my friend in Japanese and didn't take the hint that we'd rather be on our own. He came into the bathroom without knocking while I was brushing my teeth very early in the morning getting ready to go hiking to tell me how to use the hot water (?) which was not necessary, then told us to hurry up even though we had plenty of time to make the bus. He was also very flirty with me and my friend, which some people may not mind but made us a bit uncomfortable. Overall we had a good stay but for single girls alone I might recommend a different choice. Be aware that the Airbnb post is managed by their daughter who lives in another city and whose English is quite good. Setsuko and Kiyomi speak a bit of English but you should be comfortable with a language barrier unless you speak Japanese.

The airbnb was in a quiet location easily accessible from the bus stop. The room was very cozy, with a lot of rare Japanese books! Though there were occasional spiders and mosquitoes visiting the room (lol) that wasn't much of a problem - if you are scared of bugs, you won't stand Yakushima! Setsuko san provided us with warm coffee/tea upon our arrival, and she was always home and available whenever we needed help. The family was very supportive when I told them I wanted to prepare a surprise birthday cake for my friend whom I was traveling with. Kiyomi san also provided us with very helpful information for how to get ourselves around Yakushima, and also on good places to rest during our Jomon-sugi hike. This helped a lot! He also kindly got us a rent-a-car on the last day when we had to change plans due to the weather. He took us to the rent-a-car store near the airport for a small fee, and gave us a guide of the island as well. Unfortunately we had forgotten several items when we left, but Setsuko san kindly e-mailed us about them. Overall it was a good experience. Thank you so much for everything!

My stay at KANOKO's was exceptionally nice. Communication was very good. Kanoko's Dad picked me up at the ferry port (for a small fare), this was really good for me, because I had big luggage. During my stay, I received every morning a very special breakfast (with local food, which I never tasted before). It was phenomenal, to experience that. After breakfast Kanoko's Dad always sit down with me to plan the day. He gave me a lot of good advise what I can do. And told me about History and very special places around Yakushima. I was at Yakushima with my bicycle to explore the Island. Kanoko's Dad gave me his phone number to pick me up everywhere when I would be to tired to make it home again...I never used it..but it was very kind. In my opinion, if you want to explore Yakushima, staying at Kanoko's place is a very good starting point. The family is extremely kind and helpful with a lot of good tips to share. I would recommend it for everyone.
