Minutes walk to First (Erakor) Lagoon, with an island at the end of your street! Erakor Island resort ferry at end of street, and Le Lagon resort facilities across the road. Large yard with plants and trees, outdoor wood fire bbq and hot stone cooking facilities. Adjoining a friendly local community - experience local neighbourhood life at the mama's food stalls and kava bars on our street. Convenient to downtown, main supermarket, galleries, museum, surf beach by frequent public transport.
The house is designed for tropical climate, with high ceilings and wide windows for good airflow in the living area, and an indoor/outdoor screened dining area. The bedrooms at the rear of the house are designed to be very strong in event of cyclone or earthquake, both common natural hazards here. (We are proud to say our house stood up very well in the serious cyclone Pam and has also been through a few big earthquakes!) It has a good size L-shaped verandah with views over the yard and Le Lagon resort gardens and lagoon glimpses. The house is set at the back of the property on a rise, with an elevated view over Le Lagon resort gardens. It faces east so gets a lovely morning sun and also moon-rise, and cooling tradewinds (South to Southeast) most of the time.
The standard of the interior is modest but comfortable and very functional, the standard and style of a typical beach holiday house in western countries. We have a very large yard (3/4 acre or 2,800m2) that feels a bit rural even though its so close to town. There is another small bungalow on the property that is permanently rented out, but the layout ensures your privacy.
We lost a number of trees and plants in Cyclone Pam and are in the process of replanting our much-loved tropical flower and food gardens.
Next door is a local settlement of people from the island of Buninga. Their grandparents came here over 30 years ago as labourers to build the Le Lagon resort and they settled here, but are now being squeezed by land development. They were hit hard by Pam both in their settlement and on their home island. We have a good relationship with them, and try to assist them in any small way we can to improve their quality of life.
You will hear the sounds of daily local life: children laughing and playing; church choir practicing and roosters crowing. In the evenings our small street down to the lagoon becomes a community space with the neighbourhood mama's selling local snacks from their street stalls, and two local kava bars to relax and pass the time of day.
