A medieval flanking tower of the 15th Century castle (now open to guests), one of three Airbnb spaces on the historic estate. Newly renovated. Entirely self-contained and private. Quiet, beautiful setting, in gardens by a river. Perfect for a couple.
The Turret (along with nearby West Cottage and East Cottage, also on Airbnb) is one of a number of listed historic buildings around the medieval Clonbrock Castle, an important National Monument. Guests will have free access to explore the castle.
A small circular tower, linked to the castle by part of the ancient defensive walls, the Turret is comprised of a kitchen/dining area and a shower-room downstairs, and a bedroom upstairs. The latter has a high conical ceiling and windows with traditional leaded panes to east and west. The Turret has a small private courtyard, opening on to ten acres of gardens in which guests are welcome to walk.
When we were planning the Turret's renovation from a roofless, ivy-covered ruin, formerly perhaps a summerhouse before becoming an apple store, we nicknamed it the 'Love Nest'. A more dignified title might be 'Lady Gregory's Tower' (a painting of it by Augusta, Lady Gregory, hangs in the National Library of Ireland), but in fact a more suitable location for a romantic getaway is hard to imagine!
The half-glass front door opens on the kitchen, which has an eye-level mini-oven, a two-ring electric hob, an electric kettle, sink and fridge. There are a table and two chairs, and a 4 kW 'Hobbit' multi-fuel stove.
The bathroom has a small wash-hand basin, WC, heated towel rail and power shower.
An internal staircase leads up to the bedroom. The luxurious Italian bed is set under the east window, a table and chairs by the west. A dimmable eight-candle chandelier hangs over the foot of the bed, a panel radiator is to the side. A half-glass door opens onto a small stone balcony and exterior stairs.
The ingredients for self-catering breakfasts, including speciality teas and coffees, butter, marmalade, cereal and fruit will be supplied. A small loaf of bread, a litre of low-fat milk, half a dozen eggs and a litre of orange juice will be in the fridge.
Ingredients for cooking including olive oil, salt, pepper and a range of herbs and spices, are also supplied.
There is also an iron and a small ironing-board, a clothes drying-rack, a hair-dryer, garden table and chairs, and a barbecue.
The long decline of the once grand Clonbrock estate left the Turret derelict and overgrown. It was renovated, using many traditional materials and methods, in 2014-5.
Detailed information on the history of Clonbrock and the recent restorations - plus all the sights to be seen in and around the grounds - including maps and photographs, will be on the kitchen table on arrival.
Zugang für Gäste
Guests have access to about ten acres of atmospheric private woodland, gardens and riverbank. You will be welcome to explore inside the castle from the historic iron gate right up to the battlements, though a few small sections may still be roped off for safety until work is completed.
We (and our guests) can also access other local woodland walks. Fallow deer, red squirrels, pine martens, foxes - even very occasionally otters! - as well as ravens, herons and many other birds - may be seen.
The immediate grounds will be of interest to gardeners, with many old specimens rescued from neglect, and many more and often rare varieties planted in recent years.
There are fish in the river. Guests are welcome to attempt to extract them!

As little as you like! But someone will always knock on the door after you arrive to see how you're getting on, and be on hand if you have any questions. Beverly and I live in Garden House next to West Cottage.

Single-night bookings may be possible on request via Special Offer.
Our rescue/renovation project at Clonbrock is a work in progress. On weekdays there will usually be something going on somewhere, but it should have no impact on guests in the Turret.
You will find a mobile phone signal, but probably not indoors.
The internet connection, though generally fine, does play up occasionally. Although we have no download limit it's not really suited to streaming movies as the copper line is shared with the rest of the site.
Because the Turret is self-contained, there are no pets in the property as such, but you might encounter our cats, Pumpkin and Edith.

English, now living here full time. My wife Beverly and I bought Clonbrock Castle in 2005, and have been slowly but steadily repairing/renovating the tower, other buildings and the gardens. I have also worked as a scriptwriter and a computer programmer, while Beverly was a journalist and is now very knowledgeable in historical matters and gardening. We value our privacy but love meeting new people too!
