The location is excellent. The view across the water to Tarbarca is wonderful during the daytime as the ferries cross back and forth from the island to the port in Santa Pola and delightful in the evening as the lights from the fishing boats twinkle on the horizon.
Car parking is available at the foot of the building, although older and less mobile people should be aware that there are around 50 steps up from the car park to the front door. There are also around 150 steps down from the car to the beach, and back up again! It is however possible to drive down to the shore and park free of charge. Beach mats and a parasol nestle by the door.
A car is pretty much essential as Santa Pole del Este is entirely residential. The nearest supermarket ( Mercadona ) is a five minute drive away.
The apartment is well equipped and was spotlessly clean. Some of the equipment is a little tired - for example, there is a second microwave oven in the kitchen because the microwave function in the combination oven no longer works - but overall the apartment has everything you could reasonably expect. Serious chefs might want to take their own knives along as, as usual, the knives in a rented apartment are never sharp enough ;-)
Cleaning materials of all kinds are provided and when I arrived there was a supply of washing up liquid, detergent, liquid soap and even a few kitchen basics like olive oil, dried herbs and a few pods for the Nespresso machine. And the fridge had been switched on and loaded with ice ahead of my arrival! Very nice!
The main bedroom is very comfortable with a double bed and ample wardrobe space. The smaller bedrooms have single beds, less wardrobe space and much of that is given over to storage of towels, blankets and the like.
There's a large screen TV that, with a little tweaking of the settings, will show movies in their original language.
Francisco and his family are warm, friendly and excellent hosts. He contacted me on a couple of occasions during my stay to make sure that everything was going well. Maria has mastered the dark arts of translate on her mobile phone so although she speaks little English, communication is not a problem.
There are two aspects of the rental that would benefit from improvement. An internet connection would be a real plus, especially as the local 3G service is very patchy. Secondly, the air-conditioning is barely adequate for an apartment that size. It has one speed ( slow! ) and its effects are only really noticeable as you walk directly beneath it. I bought a small fan to try to circulate some cool air into the bedroom overnight.
Overall, a very pleasant and relaxing experience and if you can survive without wi-fi, one that I would wholeheartedly recommend.
