I chose this Airbnb for its proximity to the entrance for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Kathryn is knowledgable about the area and is a very thoughtful hostess. She sends lots of information ahead of time to help you plan your visit to the area. As Kathryn recommended, I prepared ahead of time and stocked up on local fruit and snacks before leaving kona, so that I could have a simple breakfast in the morning at the cottage. I did try some of the local restaurants for dinner. Cafe Ohia has fresh and locally prepared food. The Tuk tuk thai food truck is great as well and their portions are very generous. The bed is comfortable and I had the best nights sleep in that bed after busy days and nights hiking and exploring. After a long day, I was glad to just drive a few minutes out of the park to spend the night in her rainforest cottage. Definitely go to the crater each night you are there to see the crater glow because it looks different each night. The last night I was there the crater was bubbling and spewing lava.

We had a great time at Kathryn's place - the cottage was cozy, warm, clean, and perfect for the two of us. The location was great for exploring Volcanoes National Park, and also for the restaurants and shops in Volcano. We would definitely stay here again!

I have lived in Volcano Village for over thirty-two years, but first came to Volcano in 1953, as a child, and visited Volcano, with my family, every few years, during the Summertime. I moved to Volcano in 1983. We've been offering vacation-rental lodgings, in our own cottages, for just over twenty years.
We host our cottages, making them homes-away-from-home, well equipped and stocked with the less perishable breakfast foods, with movies and documentaries about HVNP on DVD, with books and maps about the island and HVNP. I greet guests, after they check in, and give them a tour of their cottage and tell them about the HVNP and the east side of the island, to maximize their touring opportunities here.
We live across from the cottages' property and are available if guests have questions or requests, but we respect their privacy and do not knock on their cottage door, once they've been greeted and settled in, unless they ask for advice or aid.
