A cheerful room with a private deck in the middle of the fantastic Richmond neighborhood. Just steps to some of Portland's highest rated restaurants, cafes, shops and convenient bus lines for easy travel downtown.
My home is a two-bedroom one-bath craftsman bungalow with a bright and cheerful atmosphere. The neighborhood (Richmond) was listed as one of the best places to live in the west by Sunset Magazine and it shows. Within less than 5 minutes on foot you can dine at Portland's best restaurants and cafes. I love living here and look forward to sharing the space with you.
The house balances the charm of old architecture with tasteful upgrades, including a well-equipped kitchen and insulation to keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter. The room offers a comfortable queen size bed, private outdoor deck and shared bathroom. The bed frame and mattress were purchased from Oregon's most successful local mattress business which prioritizes sustainability and high quality materials (Oeko-Tek and Certi Pur US certified).
For your comfort the room includes a complete closet and bureau, adjustable bedside reading lights, full length mirror, sitting area, and access to an iron and ironing board. The adjoining private deck (accessible only from the room) overlooks the back garden and has a table and chairs for two. It's a lovely refuge and perfect for unwinding in the evening or enjoying a morning cup of coffee.
Wifi is accessible throughout the house.
The shared bathroom is in excellent condition and has a clawfoot tub. I am happy to arrange access that works for both of us.
The living room and dining room have an open floor plan and plenty of seating. You are welcome to set up your laptop at the dining table and use it as a work space. I spend most of my time in the kitchen so it's likely you'll have these spaces to yourself!
The kitchen was recently updated and has a lovely 6-burner stove and deep stainless steel sink. The house as a whole gets excellent natural light and has a bright, positive feeling.
I love gardening and grow vegetables as well as ornamental plants. There is seating on the front porch for taking in the plant life as well as bicycles passing by (I live on a bike route).

I am happy to share the space and invite you to enjoy the living room and dining room, which also serves as a good work area. You are welcome to use the kitchen to store food or prepare simple meals. The back yard and front porch are great hangouts as well.

Guests are welcome to contact me before their visit with requests to make their stay as comfortable as possible. I am a huge fan of Portland and can share information about destinations, restaurants and more. Your room includes books and written materials about sites, restaurants and local transportation to peruse at your convenience.
My work schedule is flexible, but I generally work Monday-Friday during business hours (occasionally from home) and am busy many evenings and weekends, so you should have plenty of alone time! Particularly during the summer I plan getaways, so it's possible I'll be out of town for part of your stay. I always prefer to greet guests in person, but I also have a simple self check-in process if you arrive while I am out of town, or before I return from work. My listing is a good choice if you are comfortable with a busy host who enjoys chatting when we cross paths. I am available if you'd like a tour of the neighborhood or pointers about the city. I also respect the need for privacy and space.
The Richmond neighborhood (Hawthorne/Division) area of Southeast Portland is a gem. Some of the city's finest restaurants, shops, breweries and cafes are within a 5-15 minute walk of the house. Portland is well known for food carts, and one of the area's largest food cart "pods" is just a few blocks away. These amenities are coupled with charming homes, local parks (Laurelhurst and Mt. Tabor) and easy access to downtown.
The nearest grocery store, Fred Meyer, is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive, and is also accessible by bus. It has an excellent natural foods and organic section and is reasonably priced. There are two New Seasons Markets in close proximity - one is just 2 blocks from Fred Meyer. There are also small convenience markets within walking distance.
Very easy! The neighborhood is extremely walkable and public transportation is minutes away (I did not own a car during my first two years in Portland). During rush hours buses run as frequently as every 5 minutes and every 15 minutes during "off" hours. The #4 Division bus is less than a 5 minute walk from the house, and is a 20 minute ride to city center. The #14 Hawthorne bus is about an 8 minute walk.
Several car sharing services including car2go and Zipcar are easily accessible. Uber and Lyft are popular as well.
I live on one of Portland's designated bike routes. BIKETOWN, Portland's brand new bike share system, has a station within 2 blocks on the corner of 34th and Division. I can provide a helmet! :)
Free on-street parking is readily available within a block of the house.

My 100-year old craftsman bungalow has the charm and quirks of an old home. Some doors and floor boards creak, but that's also what I love about them. :) I putter about in the early mornings to prepare for work but I try to keep noise to a minimum.
I don't have a TV, so please bring your laptop to watch your favorite programs and movies.
My neighborhood is vibrant and houses are relatively close - you might hear occasional noise from nearby yards in the summer, but that's part of the festivity of Richmond!
Finally, I appreciate when potential guests complete as much of their profile as possible and include some information in their reservation requests - even a sentence or two about the reason for your visit, travel style and desired experience is very helpful!
I imagine that most Airbnb guests are respectful and observe common courtesies during visits. I work weekday business hours and appreciate quiet after 10:00 pm. I will do the same so as not to disturb you.
No smoking please.
I appreciate you removing your shoes while in the house - Portland rain and hardwood floors don't mix very well! :)
