Beautiful house, but is it worth it? If your experience is like mine, as soon as you've paid over $3000 through AirBnB, the process isn't over — it is just beginning. And because you've spent the money and your visit is coming soon, you won't risk backing out. The "application process" will continue over email and by phone. Cindy requests to call you immediately after payment has been processed on Airbnb. She'll ask you to sign a long, fine-print-filled separate contract (emailed to you; then print, sign, scan, email it back, etc etc). And, she'll require you to fill out a renter's credit application, as though you were seeking a year-long lease, as if you haven't already paid! She'll demand your income information, social security number, job history, references, and other private information. You’re in no-mans land: you’re not approved by Cindy, but you’re approved by AirBnB. With the strict cancellation policy Cindy applies through AirBnB, it's too late to back out now. So, you'll comply. AirBnB has already applied a $3000 (!) security deposit to the transaction — but Cindy will duplicate that, requiring you to send by priority mail a personal paper check for an additional $3000 security deposit. And, she’ll ask for an extra $270 “tax”, in clear violation of AirBnB’s assurance that “upon your payment of the Total Fees to Airbnb Payments, your payment obligation to your Host is satisfied.” She will immediately cash this extra payment of $3270. The house is nice, but you'll face ubiquitous reminders and warnings throughout. You've already paid a $300 cleaning fee (!), but a sign by the sink will warn you that dishes must be washed and put away, or else you'll be fined. You'll need to go buy paper towels, laundry detergent, and soap for the kitchen and bathrooms in addition to shampoo and bath supplies — all for a three night stay. There will be signs next to every shower requiring that you limit your showers to five minutes. This for a house you are paying more than $1000 a night for! Upon departure, she will follow you through the house, looking at her watch, interrogating the guests (whom she has blocked in by her hastily parked car), and, if you’re as lucky as I was she will even speak in raised tones at your 68 year old mother who is hurriedly trying to clean, dry and put away dishes lest we get slapped with a fine. She will talk to you, your friends, your family and your husband so as to make your skin crawl. It’s not over yet. She’s got your $3000 in her bank. In the next days, she will quiz you in an apparent attempt to have you confess to fine-able offenses — any property damage you’d forgotten to announce? You’ll wait for your deposit back. A check will come in the mail, but how much will you be fined? Perhaps, like us, $100 for having parked a car in the street. Or who...

Kristin~ Your group was my first "problem" in over 8 years of doing this. I find it interesting that you didn't mention why I was at the house upon your departure. I received a call from my cleaners that I had to come to the property because your party was still in the house after check out time and that there were 11 cars parked out front! You knew only 5 cars were allowed and a maximum of 12 guests. Yet there had to have been close to 18 people and 11 cars when I arrived 30 minutes past the required check out time! Was I upset? You bet. Had you checked out on time, I would not have had to come by "looking at my watch." That was the first time Ive had to do that!! You even asked earlier if you could have a later check out and I apologized for not being able to honor that due to other guests checking in that day. Did I interrogate your guests? Other than asking them where you were, no I didn't. Nor did I speak in a raised tone to your mother. Not sure why you are claiming that because I thought your mother was lovely. Who knows when you would have left the property had I not been there. My cleaners were delayed and not happy. In regards to you other complaints, we are required to collect a 10% bed which I did not see from Airbnb and I do ask that showers be kept to 5 minutes because if you haven't heard, we are in a terrible drought here in SB and its just something we need to pay attention to. I have never supplied shampoo (Im not a hotel) but did leave paper towels, soap, tp and a limited about of laundry detergent. Yes dirty dishes should be done but I believe this to be a common request in this business, as every property I've stayed in has had the same rule. I suspect you are upset due to the fact I retained $100 for your extreme violation of parked cars. Kristin you greatly jeopardized my standing with my neighbors, not to mention ability to continue renting, with your blatant disregard for the rules. I wish I could attach the photo I took to show all the people and cars you parked on our private road which does not allow for street parking. Your deposit was mailed back to you well within the stipulated two week time frame, not sure why your complaining about that either. Lesson learned for me, keep to responsible Adult behaving groups only.
