We had been told that on arrival on Mljet we would meet Helena’s housekeeper who would drive us to the flat, cook us a meal and give us guidance as to anything we needed. When we did arrive the housekeeper drove us at a dangerous speed (whilst on the telephone) to the flat, pointed at various amenities in the flat and then left. We were told the local town was 15 minutes on foot, when in fact turned out to be a 30 minute, exhausting walk. We had additionally been informed by Helena that she would have installed Wifi by the summer, which she had not. Given the high price tag on the flat, we had expected wifi, and were let down. The flat itself is (as advertised) was simple and attractive, with a lovely view. However, either the bathroom’s fan or plumbing seemed to create nasty smells which would not go away for our entire trip, and a shower mat was not provided, meaning that the bathroom and the kitchen floor became dangerously slippy after each shower. Additionally, the hot water itself would not last for more than five minutes (although the boiler remained noisy and disruptive consistently). The flat has a clearly advertised ‘quiet terrace’. The terrace itself is shared by two or more families with young children, the children were consistently playing and would make a quiet dinner almost impossible for those who desire it. Additionally, on arriving home one day I opened my laptop and ants poured out of the keyboard. On further inspection we found many ants in the flat and some in our bed, although there was no food in the room.
Unfortunately, the treatment we received ruined our trip for us, and made a positive review impossible. On the day of our departure, at around 11:30am (Helena had not specified a departure time and it was listed on AirB&B as ‘flexible’), a man whom we had never met before, but recognised as a neighbour, burst into the flat without knocking and tried to explain something in broken English, which we interpreted as ‘you should have left by now’. After this interruption we were confused, but we had little time to recover as a woman (who again we had never met) burst into the apartment and started shouting at us in Croatian and pointing towards the air conditioning. Her manner was very aggressive and very rude, and the experience ruined the entire accommodation experience for us. Additionally, Helena had told us that we would be ‘approached’ by a family member who would give us a lift to the ferry. Fortunately we were not relying upon this or we might have missed our ferry. As it was, we were forced to rush away from the apartment after being so rudely shouted at. Although Helena herself was friendly and helpful over the messenger service, the treatment we received on her behalf reflects badly upon her.
