Our newly renovated rustic cottage is a quiet retreat in the heart of the Middle Raccoon River Valley. Situated on our acreage, the cottage overlooks a prairie and veggie garden. With close proximity to Whiterock Conservancy, guests can easily access hiking and mountain biking trails, or float the nearby river.
A "rookery" is a nesting site for herons, a bird that prefers quiet, undisturbed habitat near water. And so the Rookery Cottage seeks to provide a natural escape from the daily grind.
This building used to be a flower shop and was built using reclaimed barn board and other re-purposed materials. It has comfortable heated floors and an air conditioner. We converted it to a guesthouse in 2016 by installing a new bathroom shower, toilet, and vanity; adding a mini-kitchen with basic amenities (sink, fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, electric skillet, & small charcoal grill for outdoor use); and furnishing a living room and bedroom.
The Rookery Cottage can sleep up to six guests. There are two queen beds and a futon.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a TV but no cable or internet at the cottage. And some cell phones will not have service. Relax and unplug!

Our acreage is home to dogs, chickens, cows and honey bees. We also share our space with wildlife. In the evening, it is not uncommon to hear coyotes, owls, whippoorwills, and occasionally a bobcat.
Please leave the cottage as you found it. You are welcome to use dishes, coffeemaker and skillet, but please wash what you use. All pets must be disclosed at the time of booking and kept on a leash while outdoors. Guests are welcome to explore our wooded and prairie-full acreage, but be mindful of electric fences and beehives. Please do not approach cows or chase the chickens, who roam freely. Absolutely no smoking or candles allowed inside of the Rookery Cottage.
I am an avid traveler and former Peace Corps volunteer. I have visited 19 countries, most recently Nepal and Ecuador. I love to hear others' travel experiences. My husband, Matt, is an outdoorsman and works for a nonprofit land trust. He knows this area and its hiking trails like the back of his hand. We both enjoy growing our own food, raising chickens, and spending time in nature with our two dogs.
