HISTORY:
The pride and joy of the village of Bawali is the grandiose 300 -year-old Bawali Rajbari. Established by the The Mondal family, who moved to Bengal from UP, at least five hundred years ago, They were originally known to be the Roys. Shovaram, the grandson of Basudev Roy (who lived between the end of 16th century and the early 17th century ), was awarded the title Mondal. Shovaram’s grandson Rajaram (Harananda Mondol) was the senapati of the Raja of Hijli he helped Akbar’s general Mann Singh subdue rebellions in the east, and was granted the title, along with several hundred thousand bighas of land in 24 Parganas. The Tollygunge market in South Kolkata, is housed on what used to be Mondol land. The family set up residence in Bawali. This marked the beginning of their dominance in the area, roughly around 1710. The family flourished under Rajaram’s grandson Haradhan, who enjoyed the patronage of East India Company. He built many temples and his seven sons followed in his footsteps, turning the nondescript village into a temple town.
Unfortunately the Mondal family was unable to sustain this life of opulence for very long. Trade soon dwindled, as did the fortune of the Mondal family. The mansions and temple became a white elephant, impossible to maintain with meager income. It was not long before the grandiose structures began to crumble to dust.
The Rajbari was built for personal use by very wealthy zamindars. This one is about 250 years old.. “The area around Bawali was then entirely swampland and forest, “Little rivers everywhere, and some isolated cottages of the Bauli people, known to be worshipers of the goddess Bonbibi. The restoration started in 2010. This was a delicate and complicated operation requiring a great deal of specialist knowledge, much of which is now rare. Masons had been brought from Murshidabad, where the art of working with chuna and surki are still alive. They also received training in restoration at the Aga Khan Foundation in Delhi. Shiraj-da is a master mason from Murshidabad, who leads the team of masons and oversees most of the restoration. He listed the varied ingredients that are once again being used to restore this magnificent structure to it’s original glory — “chuna, surki, khoa (ground brick), bel (fruit pulp, fermented), chitay gur (solid jaggery), sugarcane gur, supari and methi (both fermented), urad dal and mustard oil to finish.” This kind of masonry takes months to dry properly, but when it does, he says, “it is indestructible.”
Not one bit of the beautiful palace has been evaded as we have tried to restore every corner of The old Rajbari to preserve the essence of Royalty.

Nutzerprofil von Rukhen

Hi! I am Rukhen. We have recently restored this grand heritage and would love for you to come and stay with us at the Rajbari Bawali. I have been born and brought up in Kolkata and I studied in Michigan. I moved back a couple of years ago and have started looking after this property of ours.

Heritage and restoration amuses me and it reflects in my style of work! You can catch me hanging out with my friends in the city over the weekends. Should you happen to stay at the Rajbari, and our dates coincide, I would be more than happy to direct you to other architectural marvels of the city!

I wish you a pleasant stay. Thanks !
