Good and regular communication across all platforms with Mary for ease of use ((SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) etc.). This made it easier for local questions as well as quick changes to the stay like a "late checkout" to be organised no problem. The property is exactly what is listed and that's exactly what I needed.
Mary is a fantastic host. Met me, and showed me around a little. Let me start by stating that for the money she probably has one of the cleanest, and hippest units on AirBnB in the city center of Shanghai. Retro Art Deco wall paper, a huuuuuge walk-in closet and spacious private kitchen/bathroom area. Now please know that if you are not familiar with Shanghai the owners of these large older buildings do NOT care how dirty they get in the hallways, or the bug problems that come from it. The Chinese government doesn't care either. I DID spot a couple cockroaches in the flat. But let me say, out of Mary's control. The building has not been cleaned in decades. It is a tenement. Also some of the occupants on this floor, are strange. My first night, a guy came knocking on the door police style at 6:30am. No English, and to this day I have no idea what he wanted. Also, I would come home, and in the matter of 3 days, I found an old scarf, a dirty sock and a key left on the door handle. I swear someone was playing a game of Clue with me. lol If you are a night owl, be prepared to walk up 5 flights of stairs. They shut down both elevators around 11:30pm. No idea why? Mary didn't know either. As far as location, it was OK. People's Square has 20 metro exits, and the closest one to Mary's flat is a solid 15 minute brisk walk. Not 'close' by any means. Along the way there is coffee, and a huge shop that sells huge containers filled with fresh fruit for 10 RMB. If you get the late night munchies, walk out take a left go down the street and a lady will bbq a huge variety off food for you very cheap. My favorite place to go was Taxi Pizza. Owned by a 5 year Italian resident of Shanghai named Bepe. Take a right out the door of the building -- do NOT cross the street and walk down maybe 100m or so. Closes at 10:30 though. Excellent pizza, high end bottled beer, and fresh New Zealand Oysters.
