There aren't many reviews on airbnb yet about this place, so we will try to be as detailed as possible. Though it is new to airbnb, it was apparent once we were there that Brenda has been renting her cottage out for many years through other platforms, so vacationers can rest assured that Brenda is an experienced host and it is clear she has worked hard to make this a great place. Brenda's cottage is really lovely and peaceful. The view from the main room is beautiful, and the abundant windows allow you to enjoy the scenery and coastline even when you are indoors. We were particularly happy with the well-stocked (pots/pans/etc) kitchen. We usually cook even on holiday (for those of you who don't like to cook, restaurants are a bit of a trek - so you wouldn't really want to plan to eat out every meal). The outside area has a lovely garden with vegetables and flowers, and a set of outdoor table & chairs provides a great place to sit to enjoy watching the tides, read, play games, whatever. It's a perfect spot for a relaxed, "hanging around" sort of holiday. There are pleasant places to walk nearby with relatively little traffic. We could also stroll down at low tide to a small rocky area down by the water, where there were plenty of seashells and seaglass to look for. We were there early in September, and the weather wasn't good for swimming in any case, but we did walk or drive to a couple of very pretty beaches. We would best describe this as a "retreat/unplugging" type setting; there is very little (if anything) for tourists, so if your preference is for shopping, paid activities, dining out, etc, you will probably be in the car for a longer drive than if you planned to stay in a less remote area. That said, if you want to spend uninterrupted time just relaxing and hanging out, you will be really happy you came here. Even with poor weather most of the week we were there, we had such a nice view that we didn't feel like we could be "just anywhere" when stuck indoors :) The only critique we have is that the sleeping arrangements weren't ideal. The two beds upstairs in the bedroom were comfortable. But, if traveling with children, note that the stairs are narrow and steep (it's a charmingly antique cottage, with just the one room upstairs), and there is a gap at the top of the stairs with no railing to the first floor - not huge, but big enough to stumble through. There is also a low slant of the ceiling at the top of the stairs and in the bedroom itself, so anyone over about 5' tall will need to bend over to avoid hitting the ceiling. Less comfortable were the pull out sofa and the extra sleeping space in the lighthouse room. Both are probably perfectly adequate for kids or teens,...
Antwort von Brenda:
It was wise for Jenny and Frank to point out that using the stairs (which is open plan with a railing on one side and not both sides) would not be suitable for very young children. We don't rent our cottage to folks with toddlers for that reason, but when we learned that Jenny and Frank's girls were nine and eleven, we thought they would be safe using the stairs. In the 30 years we have rented out our cottage, we have been very fortunate not to have anyone injured while visiting, and we hope that continues. It is quite true that folks do need to bend their heads while going from the upper landing into the bedroom, but once in the bedroom, it is possible to stand without bending for someone like me, who is five foot six, and for my husband who is 5 foot eleven. I have not measured the height of the bedroom ceiling (which does slant off on both sides) but it will be interesting to see the actual height when we visit next weekend.
Brenda and Alan's place is a beautiful cottage by the waters. It is small, but well-equipped for a comfortable and relaxing stay. We had a very peaceful stay there for four days, and would love to return some day! From the start Brenda did everything to inform us about the area, and even sent us a CD by mail days after we booked. She was always prompt in her responses, and always went that extra mile in offering me information about everything from how to get seafood to how to cook lobster! She did not merely respond to my queries, but rather advised, suggested, and it was like I was speaking to someone I knew from before! That meant a lot to me. The most unique and amazing thing about this place is the ready and easy availability of fresh seafood. We could see the wharf from the beautiful backyard, and we drove down for a few minutes to get the lobster from the fishermen! Just the experience made our trip! There was also a place within a fifteen-minute drive that sold crabmeat in containers. It was as fresh as seafood can be, and we loved it! The garden at the back also has gigantic fresh vegetables, and the water is amazing too. The rise and fall of the tides is quite apparent, and it was a treat for our little boy! All in all, this place was the perfect setting for our end-of-summer getaway, and we hope to be back someday! Thanks Brenda and Alan!
