Near NJPAC, Rutgers, the brand new Whole Foods, Halsey street shops and Newark Broad Street train station, this lovingly refurbished home has a decorative fp and original hardwood floors, dishwasher, new fridge, stove and country sink. You’ll love my place because of the large eat-in kitchen, high ceilings, the marble bath with soaking tub and skylights, the Stearns and Foster mattress and 100% cotton sheets. Ideal for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and families (with kids).

Der Wohnraum

We imported tiles from Mexico, including saltillos, to decorate the eat-in kitchen. The bathroom sink looks like a wedding cake and features a soaking tub.

Zugang für Gäste

Once you walk in the front door, you will see the door to the first floor apartment. Everything on this floor is yours. To access the back patio, you walk through the back kitchen door.

Weitere wichtige Infos

This apartment has high speed internet. Our favorite places to shop for (organic) food and produce: Wholefoods in Newark, Halsey Street.
In or near Newark, I buy fish in Ironbound. Seabra’s supermarket has very fresh fish at an excellent price. They also have fresh baked Portuguese bread. I recommend the Health Food Store on Broad Street near the Stadium. It is difficult to park there. Newark’s Pueblo supermarket has excellent and affordable avocados, mangos, yuca and plantains along with other Latin American fruits and vegetables. It is located on Mt. Prospect. Fruitstands (just past Saint Michael’s) on Broadway have fresh fruits. In Montclair (North of Newark, up Bloomfield), I recommend the Montclair Bread Company’s whole wheat bread and pizza. Whole foods is also located along Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair). In NYC, you can shop at the 4th street organic food coop, Whole foods, Gary Null’s Whole Foods Uptown (at 89th and Broadway), or the Union Square Farmer’s Market.

It all depends on what you're looking for. The apartment is spacious and the price is more than fair. Laura and Ruben were generally very helpful and reactive when we had issues or questions (we rented their place for a whole month, so we had time for issues to come up and be worked out). If you're looking for a place to do NYC-area tourism without the expense and potential hassle of staying in the city, this could be a doable option. But if you don't have a car, you should know that, while this apartment is convenient enough (a short walk to Newark Broad St station and an easy bus ride to Newark Penn Station), it's still a bit of a trek to go to and from Manhattan. That trade-off is fairly reflected in the price, which is easily half (if not less) than that of a similar place in NYC. If Newark is your bag, the Lower Broadway neighborhood where this apartment is located is an interesting area: pretty close and very well-connected by public transportation to Newark's downtown, the neighborhood has several delicious and cheap Central & South American and Caribbean restaurants, some colorful bars, interesting architecture, including a few striking landmarks like the Sacred Heart Basilica and Branchbrook Park, which are must-sees for any stay in the Brick City. However, you may not feel all that comfortable strolling through the neighborhood on your own at night...

Great little space close to a lot of different restaurants. Nice quiet neighborhood, Laura and Ruben where great hosts offering us places to eat as well as showing us around the place and making us feel welcome.

This home was cozy, convenient and calm. It was a lovely, well-kept space in a nice neighborhood in the city. Would recommend 10 out of 10!

The home itself is beautiful and very clean! Everything is tidy and spacious. It's an older building, so the floorboards squeak and are a little loud but I loved that it added to the vintage feel of the apartment. I really felt like I was on the East Coast (I'm from LA) with the style of the bathroom and living room. My favorite part was the kitchen- I absolutely loved coming into the kitchen in the morning with the sunlight streaming through the window and sitting at the breakfast table to eat! It was so cozy and inviting. I was only there for a short time but I really enjoyed being there :) It was so sad leaving! My only complaint is from check-in. I flew on a long flight from California, had an hour-long hassle getting an Uber from the airport, and when I finally arrived at the building, discovered the host had given me incorrect directions to my place. I spent a long time trying to enter what I was told was my front door (which I later found out was sealed off, and actually led to what would be my bedroom in the apartment). I couldn't reach the host or a good number of the emergency numbers provided, so I was worried and confused. It was finally sorted out eventually and the host was very gracious, but it was stressful after traveling so far only to be stuck sitting on my luggage in a small hallway with nowhere to go and nobody to ask. Just be sure to double-check instructions, since mistakes do happen and the house manual may need to be updated with the right wifi password.

I enjoy the stay but expect to find some basic home appliances like toaster and squeezer. Clean place with good heating. Well located if you have a car, as neighborhood at night looks little dangerous.

The place is close to public transportation and it's easy to find parking. Overall it's a great place but a little different from the pictures considering the setting was changed. Our experience was great, it's a place I would consider a home. We had a minor issue with the bathroom but didn't have time to get it fixed as we were always on the move. The proximity of the train station makes it easy to go to New York City and come back. Another great point is the WiFi as we had to do some work sometimes. Great time in Newark, thank you!

Nutzerprofil von Laura And Ruben

Hi. Laura is originally from Seattle and Rubén is originally from Peru. Now we live in Newark. Laura has been an English professor since 2000 and Rubén writes poetry and can fix most anything. We enjoy cooking, eating organic local produce and practicing yoga and tango in Newark and NYC. Our family likes to travel to learn about the world and have recently visited India, Brazil, Peru and Cuba. We like to read Elizabeth Bishop, Shakespeare, and Carlos de Rokha. We respect others' privacy but we are happy to help strangers as we know what it is like to be in a foreign land. Our motto: "you reap what you sow."
