First time using Airbnb and this apartment/experience was horrible! There were no reviews of the place, and initially no photos, so that should have been a red flag. Trying to communicate with the host before the trip was time-consuming and frustrating - she wouldn't return phone calls, and her text number wouldn't accept my text replies. When she finally called me the day before arrival, she said I needed to contact her when I arrived outside the building, then she would provide me the building code for entry (she left the door to the apt. unlocked).
When I opened the apt. door, two things hit me - the musty, moldy smell, and the two posters on the wall of Bob Marley smoking pot (that was the only thing on the walls). The place had almost no furniture - the living room had a couch, two tiny/bizarre chairs, and that's basically it...and no TV in the apt. The area between the kitchen and living room had a tiny card table that was messed up, the top was collapsing, and several cheap folding chairs. The kitchen had decent appliances, but the cupboards were empty - NO PLATES, DISHES, COOKWARE, SILVERWARE, CUPS!!
The bedroom/bed was ok - there were women's clothes in the closet area, don't know if it's common for the host to have their own clothes in the place. Fortunately the bathroom was nice, clean, and a good shower.
Four months before my trip I rented the apt. through Airbnb and emailed the host regarding wifi, a definite need for me. She said she would have wifi by the time I arrived, but there wasn't any. She then kept promising me during my stay that she was working on it, but it never got connected, and that caused me problems.
The location of the apartment was good, and the bathroom, but that's about it. A friend of mine who stopped by the apt. joked that it seemed to be either a crash place from druggies, or a place to shoot porn movies (haha!). In the future I'll try Airbnb again, but only if there are photos and good reviews on the site.
