Holladay Home is a cozy partitioned studio in Bernal Heights. It is a quiet place but close to the action. San Francisco and Bernal Heights in particular are known for the beautiful views but that means hills. You will love it here.

Der Wohnraum

This studio is located on a quiet street but so close to all the action. You can feel safe leaving you car in front of my house (you get the spot in front of the garage so it will always be free). Inside you will find a fully renovated studio. You will have your own queen sized bed and fold out queen futon to comfortably sleep 4. There is a beautiful Japanese sliding door that separates the space so you can have some privacy from the front door if you like (a good friend of mine built the door by hand out of Canadian Cedar so they smell nice and are a personal treasure of mine).

You will have a mini fridge, microwave, and breakfast station (the coolest thing ever; coffee maker, toaster, and griddle). There is no official kitchen so you will need to use the bathroom sink to wash dishes but it is nice and spacious. I have provided dishes and utensils for your convenience. The bathroom is equipped with towels, hand soap and toilet paper so please let me know if anything is running low.
There is also a washer and dryer in the main house which you may use but the times will need to be coordinated. Finally, there is a fantastic hot tub in the back yard. If you want to use it, just let me know do we can coordinate moving the dogs and letting you in.

You will have access to the entire studio apartment with a renovated bathroom; tub and glass sliding door, queen sized bed, dresser, small dinette with two stools, fold out couch and antique closet (it's nice to look at but please don't try to open it) Since you have your own key you can come and go as you like. If you go through the back door you will find a nice patio with a hot tub. The dogs have access to this area too so just let me know if you would prefer they not be out there when you are.

I live in the unit upstairs with my roommate and my two dogs. We are happy to help out in any way. My dogs are very sweet but they may bark at you when you arrive (they get very excited and assume you are coming to see them). There is a very nice front deck that you are welcome to enjoy. It is located right next to the upstairs front door. Since you have your own private entrance and access to the lockbox key it is possible that we completely miss each other for the entire stay. The key will be located in a lock box (the key and the code change with each guest). Also there is a door in your studio that leads to our back yard but it will be locked so we can not enter your space and you can not enter ours.

I am absolutely nuts about the neighborhood (I mean, after all I bought a house here). It is the sunniest part of the entire city and has some of the best views (up the hill at Bernal Park). It is quiet and safe but also has access to all the city has to offer. I like to think of it as the secret gem of San Francisco. I hope you will have time to experience some of what the city, and specifically my neighborhood has to offer. First of all walking into the mission by Precita park is a pleasure. Follow Precita street to Folsom and walk into the Mission. Some of the most exciting culture and street art lives there just on the walls of your walk. When you get to 24th street walk either left or right and enjoy the food and shops up and down the street. If you go left you will eventually reach the Bart at Mission street. If you are up for more of a walk take a right on Mission street and enjoy the heart of the Mission district. You will often see street performers or people selling wares in the plaza by the Bart stop (don't be surprised if you also see a few street people). If you make it all the way up Mission to 18th street take a left and head all the way to Dolores street where you will find one of the most best secrets of SF; Dolores Park. Here you will find interesting people, dogs playing, people selling snacks (Be aware many of the snacks have weed in them. Be sure to ask) there is also a children's playground that is brand new and pretty amazing!! If you walk up the hill you will get pretty spectacular views of the city (that hill is also called Gay Beach by locals because that side of the park lies along the Castro and many men from the neighborhood meet in that park of the park to picnic and chat and lay out in the sun)

The easiest is Precita Park Cafe. Located just by the park at Precita and Alabama. An easy walk from the house (although on the way home you have a decent hill to navigate) For brunch (since most people are in a hurry) I recommend St Francis (24th and York). It has amazing greasy spoon food but all organic and as healthy as you can make it. The staff here is exceptionally nice and it is a true SF hub so you will see all kinds of real SFians. There are a ton of taquerias in the Mission district and most are exceptional. There are a bunch of places named El Farolito but my favorite is the one at 24th and Alabama. For vegetarians: Most places will easily serve you vegetarian means but Gracias Madre makes vegan food amazing!! – Vegan Organic Fresh Mexican food (2211 Mission (email hidden)). I recommend you use (website hidden) and search in the area for food to find your pleasure.
Best Italian around here is Delfina, reservations recommended (3621 18th street). Sugoi Sushi (1058 Valencia street) will surprise and delight you with its fine balance of humbleness and sophistication. Escape from New York Pizza (3342 22nd street) is your best option for pizza by the slice or ordering a pie. Sit down pizza/salad place a bit more fancy and great for people watching is Farina at the corner of Valencia and 18th st. Brunch or breakfast is at Boogaloos (3296 22nd street at Valencia) – don’t let the crowd scare you away; waiting at the sunny corner is part of the experience.
Coffee I know very little about coffee but those who are say this is a great neighborhood for coffee. Check out Philz and Ritual. Both very close on foot. If you like pastries with your coffee, check out the croissants and bread pudding from Tartine (600 Guerrero Street). It’s a long line, but if it’s just for coffee don’t get in line, just go straight inside and order at the coffee bar.
Ice Cream Humphry Slocombe (2790A Harrison street) and Bi-Rite Creamery (3692 18th street) Cocktails Lone Palm (you can see the tree that names the bar and stands tall in front of it from my window!) at 3394 22nd street. It’s divey, but reliable.
Grocery Stores
The most convenient is the small deli on the corner of Precita and Florida. For more healthy, fancier food check out Harvest hill Market on the corner of Precita and Folsom. Other than that there are many Safeway stores and also tons of produce stands in the Mission.
Live Music
The Chapel (777 Valencia street), Amnesia (853 Valencia Street) and Elbo Room (647 Valencia street) are small venues along Valencia Street. There is also Café Revolution (it’s free music, but is also hit or miss: could be awesome or awful. It’s always worth taking a look at what’s going on there though) at 3248 22nd street. Art and other Cool things 826 Valencia, the pirate store supply/creative writing workshop, is a must go. Right near it, City Art gallery shows local art and Paxton Gate offers exotic gardening and 24th street has lots of cool art galleries as you go down towards the deep inner Mission District. Thrift stores and cool boutiques galore.
Precita Park is the easiest. Is located about 6 blocks away at Precita and Alabama. Also you can walk up the hill to Bernal Hill. This is a suprisingly large city park with some of the best views in the city. Dolores Park is about a 30 minute walk but great for people watching, or take the Muni bus to Golden Gate Park or the Ocean Beach.

If you have a car it is great for getting out of the city but I don't recommend doing much driving in the city. (Just leave the car front of the house in the spot that blocks the driveway. It will always be free. The only time parking is not allowed is between 12-2 on Wednesdays-just move your car across the street)
In general in the city parking is expensive, roads are confusing and traffic is usually pretty annoying.
If you do head out of the city for a day trip there are amazing things to see in every direction.
Mass Transit
BART - If you instead want to enjoy the city on foot and with public transit you should check out BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit - our version of the subway). Bart is great but does not cover the whole city) Fortunately for you it is located pretty close to the house (about a 15-20 minute walk) and will take you downtown and to Oakland.
MUNI - If you want to visit other places I recommend you check out MUNI. The bus system can be a little confusing but will get you anywhere you want to go. People are friendly, just ask them:)
Car Share - My final recommendation for transport is to use one of the cooperative car share systems. It is just like a cab but better!! Go to the site and register. Lyft is one of the best things to ever grace SF. It is a taxi service with a mobile app. You request a ride, they come to you and it is charged to your credit card. The taxi system in SF is a mess so I would not expect to call a cab and have them show up (if they find a fare on the way to you, they will take it and leave you in a lurch).

Last piece of advice. Even if the weather is great now it will get about 20 degrees colder around 4 pm. Always, always bring layers (a windbreaker and scarf are gold in this city).

Zugang für Gäste

Access is very convenient as I have a lock box with the key. Just let me know at least a day before you arrive with your arrival time (any time after after 4pm on the check in day) then you can let yourself in. That way you can come and go at your leisure. I am available for questions and recommendations but I won't intrude on your privacy.

Interaktion mit Gästen

I am happy to be as involved as you like. Some of my guests like to join me for a drink on my back patio, I have even taken guests to events in the city. But I also respect your privacy (and of course I am not always around). Please let me know if you'd like to connect in person, otherwise I'll try to stay out of your hair:).

Weitere wichtige Infos

I have a parking space right in front of the house (you will be parking in the street right in front of my garage). As in most cities there is not a ton of parking around so having a spot here is gold. Keep in mind that if you have a very large car it may be difficult to park but with some advanced notice I can shuffle things around and we can make it work.

All that I ask is that you respect my house as if it were your own (or maybe your parents':) The room has a couple of really important pieces that I am happy to share but hope to keep in good shape (I have a large antique armoir that is to look and and not to open. Also the Japanese sliding doors were made by hand by a friend of mine and are pretty delicate so please be careful.)

I like to be as resource responsible as possible, so I ask you to use only the towels and bedding that you need and to be conscious of water use (CA is in a serious drought). I have provided toilet paper that is made of sugar cane husk and we do recycle, so please help out with that.

Finally, San Francisco has some of the best tap water in the world (better than most bottled water. Nestle actually uses our water to bottle and sell)!!! Please don't buy bottled water. Just fill up your water bottles in the bathroom sink; it's free:)

Overall we really enjoyed our visit to San Francisco, and Maury's place suited us well for the short visit. It has all the essentials you need and a decent amount of space- especially for a San Fran apartment! The bathroom is really nice and makes the space feel very polished. While this space was great for us, I couldn't help but think that some people may struggle with two aspects. The first is that if you are not comfortable with city driving and very steep hills, then getting to the house may be a bit unnerving for you. San Fran is VERY hilly, but these hills in particular, combined with the very tight streets, make for interesting navigation. Even a few Uber drivers were surprised with the tight turns. It is certainly not problematic for most, but if you are a timid driver, then you might not be comfortable with the drive. Secondly, as a lower floor apartment, you can hear human and pet footsteps. It was obvious when someone got home and the dog got excited, as there was a lot of running back and forth. It wasn't disturbing during the night, so it didn't create a problem, but it was distracting at times. With that said- it's an apartment in the city and some level of noise is expected. Overall, it was a good stay and if we were back in the area, we would have no problem staying again.

Maury's place provided a wonderful home base for my family's stay in San Francisco. The house is very close to 24th and Mission, and provided really easy access to some of the best neighbourhoods the city has to offer. If you're by foot, transit, Lyft or car, this place is convenient for it all.

I am an eastcoast transplant to San Francisco but have been here since 2006. I love it here! I recently purchased a new house and love the idea of being able to share it with visitors to this fantastic city. I work in biotech in Silicon Valley so I have an appreciation of what it means to need a car but also to be able to leave it and enjoy the city on foot. I also practice sports massage in the studio next door to the rental. I have two sweet dogs (they have no access to your space but you might hear them:)
