Extraordinary! It’s hard to imagine that the experience of staying at Villa Paraiso could surpass the anticipation, but this was exactly the good fortune that we had in renting this Costa Rican gem. We learned quickly that the 4 km trek up a winding, gravel road in a 4x4 vehicle (necessary) to get to Villa Paraiso is the norm in this part of the country, but what awaits you at your destination is beyond words. The serenity, expansive vistas, and sights and sounds of the forest are what made our experience truly special. Beautiful sunsets, star-ladened night skies, and a multitude of songbirds greeting us every morning were some of the highlights. During our stay we also saw toucans, parakeets, and other smaller jungle creatures.
There are many homes in this mountain community, all with quality craftsmanship, but they are scattered among the hills so that the feeling of each is private. We encountered friendly neighbors and locals who provided value-added smiles and information about the area. Temperatures were a steady 30C but the gentle breezes kept the house very comfortable – no need for air conditioning. The rural culture of Costa Rica was never far away, but ironically the modern amenities of electricity, drinkable tap water, etc were everywhere. Villa Paraiso was completely equipped and connected with modern appliances, TV, grill, Wifi, and other conveniences of a luxury home.
Away from the house, be prepared for a typical rural Costa Rican lifestyle. The BM (grocery) in Uvita or Palmar Norte, and an impressive looking hospital just a few kilometers down the highway, are the closest resemblances of modern city conveniences that you’ll find. But there are enough local roadside restaurants and food marts to never leave you in need. The OSA canopy zipline, El Pavon falls, and hiking in the community were some the local activities that we really enjoyed.
The owner of Villa Paraiso communicated regularly with us before and during our stay and provided lots of information to ensure that we had everything that we needed. Same for the friendly property manager who greeted us before and after our stay. The mix of peacefulness, beauty, and adventure never grew old for the four of us, including two university students on break. We regret having been able to stay for only a short time and will hopefully make it back some day. Two thumbs up for Villa Paraiso!
