On the maps of downtown Savannah for 1888; 4 simple cottages appeared just south of W. Waldburg St.--they were not on the street itself, but on the "lane" or alley between the main streets. They were the only structures on the entire block. The Civil War had been over for 20 years. The streets were not paved; there was no electricity, no central heating, and certainly no air conditioning. Transportation at the time was by foot or horseback. In fact, the brick structure immediately adjacent to Miss Minnie's was once a stable!
The Forsyth Cottages are of an architectural style known as "plantation plain". They closely resemble the dependency out buildings of a plantation. They are strikingly similar to slave dwellings on the large coastal plantations--with 2 sides for different families & the main rooms dominated by fireplaces for cooking & heating. The first tenants were most likely freedmen, domestic servants, or specialized artisans working in the larger houses nearby or in businesses further downtown.
Fast forward 125 years to the present day! These historic structures have not only survived; they have been renovated to suit modern day living. Central air, modern kitchens, & working fireplaces are the norm now. The charm of high ceilings, original heart pine flooring & cozy back courtyards add to the quaintness of these rentals.
Savannah has grown up around the cottages. They are now part of the downtown scene--2 blocks from Forsyth Park & an easy walk to most Savannah attractions--yet away from busy street traffic. Coffee shops, bars, & restaurants abound nearby. Outdoor activities in the park are common--concerts; outdoor movies, Shakespeare in the park & other events are frequent.. There is an active Farmer's Market held at the south end of the park every Saturday morning, for most of the year. A yoga studio is steps away.
The area is now favored by artists, young professionals, and students at the Savannah College of Art & Design. Many long term residents remain & the neighborhood has a bohemian vibe-- cottage is furnished in an eclectic style--with original art work & local photographs; along with antiques & period pieces. There is a queen sized bed in the bedroom--which is at the back of the cottage, facing the garden. A blow up mattress is provided to sleep 2 additional people if necessary. There is a fully equipped kitchen with a stove, dishwasher, microwave & washer/dryer. All utensils, dishes & glassware are provided, along with pots & pans so you can create your own version of Savannah's famous "shrimp & grits" using all local ingredients found easily nearby! There is a flat screen TV in the living room & internet connection for your convenience.
Miss Minnie's is perfect for a single person on sabbatical (a best seller was written at a desk in the living room!!).. It's also perfect for a romantic getaway or even a honeymoon couple. The living room boasts a working fireplace for those cool winter evenings. An identical cottage is only 2 doors down, so larger groups could rent both spaces for holiday getaways! The back courtyard is cozy, lush & private with tropical plantings & ferns. The perfect place for a morning cup of coffee, an afternoon cocktail, or a glass of wine.
**The cottage is not suitable for pre-teens & pets are not permitted due to guest allergies & valuable furnishings. No smoking is permitted on the premises. Parking is not allowed in the lane, but ample free parking is easily found on the surrounding streets.
Miss Minnie's cottage provides you a unique opportunity to see how humble Savannahians lived over a century ago. (except that you get central air/heat & electricity!)...Come enjoy a slice of Savannah history!!

My former life includes 20 years in NYC in a banking/finance career. Love the big city & all it offers, but also appreciate living on a smaller scale in a place like Savannah.
I try to get to Europe for a few weeks at least once a year & will gladly trade travel stories with other travel aficionados. After grad school, I bought a one way ticket & lived in Brasil for 2 years; working as an english teacher & living with brazilian students in a pension. Also traveled to Argentina, Paraguay, & Uruguay during that time...
