Thamel is the main tourist hub of Kathmandu, Nepal. The streets are teeming with life. And everything is literally within a minute of this apartment.

But that's just the start. This amazing apartment is on the third floor of a beautiful Neo Classical / Newari fusion building. The two bedrooms have two classic bay windows and so that you can observe life as it happens in Thamel without the dust and noise! It also has a spacious Living/Dining area with all amenities and a fully functional kitchen.

Our apartment is not part of a hotel or a serviced apartment. It is simply, a fully furnished apartment for rent. Therefore our spaces are generous – a precious commodity in cramped Thamel! Instead of booking two puny hotel rooms, you could spend some quality time at our 800 sq. ft. two-bedroom apartment. But be aware that because it is a tourist district, there will be some road traffic and ambient noise.

The Building
The current building (built in 2010), a neo-classical and Newari fusion, was constructed in the same spot and in the same design spirit of an old house commissioned by my grandfather over a 100 years ago.

The building is designed by Nepal's top architect, Mr. Arun Pant and constructed by an ‘A' class company. It has been designed to withstand massive earthquakes. The building suffered no damage after the devastating earthquake of April 2015. A thorough check by structural engineers revealed no damage at all.

The ground floor of the building houses four shops catering to tourists. You can buy Cashmere shawls, Kashmiri handicraft and metal crafts. I'm sure they will give you a good discount if you mention that you stay above ☺

The first floor house a travel agency, the second floor is a two-bedroom apartment also listed on Airbnb as "Soundproof 2BHK Thamel Apartment". On the third floor is this two-bedroom apartment. On the top two floors is a beautiful contemporary two-bedroom penthouse also listed on Airbnb as "Contemporary 2BHK Thamel Penthouse."

The air-conditioned bedrooms have queen size double bed, large comfortable mattress, wardrobe, study table/chair, real wood parquet flooring and bathroom with running hot/cold water, western style WC, hand-held toilet spray. The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom while the second bedroom has an adjoining bathroom.

The kitchen has all the amenities you would require to prepare any meal. It is intelligently designed to enable you to cook, store and clean in as little time as possible.

The real wood dining table with a hanging dome lights provide a great atmosphere to chitchat with family or guests over dinner and wine.

You can also unwind on the comfortable leather sofa and watch a great movie or catch the latest news on the TV that has a satellite connection with over 70 channels including most of the popular news, entertainment and sports programming.

We have invested in Solar Panels and large Batteries as back up to run most things within the apartment. The back up power enables lights in Living/Dining Area, Kitchen, Bedrooms and Bathrooms. It also powers the Wi-Fi, TV, Satellite TV, DVD, Fridge and almost all power sockets.

Basic necessities are… well basically very hard to come by in Nepal. Due to acute load shedding in the winter months, we have provision for solar power and thus ask our guests to use them judiciously. But solar power is not enough to power the high wattage equipment (anything above 500 watts) which still relies on government electricity supply to run.

UPDATE: Since the end of October 2016, Kathmandu has 24 hours power (short outages now and then is expected). Never thought I'd see this in my lifetime and I'm only 40. Therefore all appliances work all the time. (Now what should I do with all the solar stuff? :-)

Water is precious too! We have a deep bore well, from which we draw water, filter and store in our underground storage tank. We also have two tanks on the rooftop that we replenish every few days from the underground storage tank so that guests always have water.

The Neo Modern Apartment is really nice and clean. You can really feel the heart, Subu and Mala put in there. In reality it is exactly the same as shown on the pictures and you have everything you need. They also put toothbrush and paste in every bathroom. So kind. To get easily around the apartment they put a manual together in which you can find everything - honestly everything! If you try to contact Subu and Mala, they're answering immediately. One of my best AirBnB experiences - for sure! If I'm going back to Kathmandu - I'll definitely stay in one of Subu and Malas apartments. Highly recommended!!!

We stayed at Subu & Mala's place for three weeks, based right in the centre of Thamel the apartment was exactly as we expected. It's very bright & airy and there's plenty of room to have space when travelling with others. Their house rules were comprehensive & it was an easy place to be based from. It's so close to everything you could want in Thamel and easy to walk straight out of the door and into a taxi for other places. We had everything we expected and would definitely go back. The only thing we would say (and this obviously depends on who you are) - but we found it very noisy even in the apartment, life never stops, and it can be hard to fall asleep, but this is really only a minor thing and just something to mention if you want total tranquility (but you probably wouldn't be staying in central Thamel). We absolutely loved it and there' a great little cafe 'Cafe Mitra' to have a tea or coffee and some lunch when Thamel gets too intense - run by lovely folks. Great apartment, great hosts - highly recommend this place! Thank you very much Subu & Mala! Hopefully we'll be back sometime!

Location and apartment were perfect for us. It could be a little noisy for light sleepers but anywhere in the middle of the city will be noisy. I'd stay here again if coming to Kathmandu.
