Birchlea is within a very attractive small horseshoe-shaped landscaped site, overlooking a pretty lochan (Scottish for large pond!). There are 8 other lodges in Kipp Paddock but each is individually/privately owned. which means it is peaceful.
Birchlea is well-placed to catch the sun from morning till evening, with 2 verandas facing towards Screel, one of the largest of the local Galloway hills. Galloway is home to the first 'Dark Sky Park' in the UK and you will see why: the unpolluted night sky is stunning!
Kipp Paddock is backed by a birch forest, part of the more extensive Dalbeattie Forest, home to the celebrated 7Stanes mountain-biking trails. There is also a 9-hole golf course across the road.
Wildlife which may pop out to see you include red squirrels, badgers, deer and countless rabbits.
Kippford sea-front is a 10-minute stroll down the hill. A former fishing village with a history of ship-building, set on the Urr Estuary leading to the Solway Firth, it is now a popular yachting base. It is also an interesting 'no-through' road. While cars cannot venture past the village centre, there are 2 lovely paths: The Jubilee Path (Scottish National Trust-owned lands) is a gentle meander across the hill to our neighbouring village, Rockcliffe (1 mile), with its sandy, curved beach - perfect for litte ones. Or the coastal 'Rough Firth Road' is a pretty coastal path beside Kippford's shell & shingle beaches and many quirky findings (you have to come to find out what those are!).

Backed by forest with walks and cycle trails; shingle and shell beaches along the shore, with views to the islands in the bay, Kippford is perfect base for walkers, rock-poolers, bucket-and-spaders, star-gazers, cyclists, water-sports enthusiasts or anyone who just wants to chill outside The Anchor Inn or The Mariner on a sunny day with a pint of local ale!

Nearby towns are Dalbeattie (3 miles), Castle Douglas (the region's 'Food Town'; 20 mins); Kirkcudbright (famous for its pretty harbour and association with the Glasgow Boys' artists; 1/2 hr) and Wigtown (Scotland's Book Town; 1 hr). There are also several good places to eat nearby, farm shops (Galloway is well-known for its produce especially beef and we have an award-winning cheese-maker nearby), and fun days out for children/teens include Cream O Galloway, The Cocoa Bean Chocolate Factory, Mabie Farm Park, Galloway Activity Centre on Loch Ken (all sorts of water-sports, rock-climbing etc.), Laggan Outdoor Centre

This was our second time here :) and we would definitely come back! The lodge is fantastic and there is so much to do in the area! We had a great week - we enjoyed Sandy Hills beach and Rockcliffe beach which are a short drive away. Both are beautiful. We also enjoyed a long walk from Rockcliffe to Sandy Hills on the coastal path. Approx 4/5 miles but we walked at least 6 miles! (According to my Fitbit and my legs!!) With a 3 and 5 year old. We managed it but it did take 3 hours! Very beautiful. Bonus of starting at Rockcliffe meant at Sandy Hills we had the shop with ice cream, chocolate and crisps!! We enjoyed a walk in the woods, a lovely playpark and fish and chips in Kirkcudbright, the playpark in Daltbeattie, cream o Galloway near castle Douglas (also a Tesco, playpark and a few nice coffee shops) dalscone farm park (£30 for 2 adults and 2 kids) and Dino park (£24 for 2 adults and 2 kids) which are both Dumfries area. are fab with brilliant soft plays and outdoor areas. Highly recommend! (There is also Mabie farm park, the chocolate factory and lots more woods, walks, beaches close by that didn't need have time to visit!)

Spent 6 nights at the lodge with our friends and 4 young children. Lovely place and perfect location. Close to beaches - we loved sandy hills and rockcliffe! Lovely little cafe called brambles close by which we would highly recommend! Host was fantastic - great communication! The children loved seeing the rabbits every morning out of their window. Lodge has everything you need. Would come back to the area and lodge. Who needs to go abroad when you have sandy hills! Sand is amazing! Many thanks for letting us stay at your lodge.

We stayed 4 nights in this lovely house, and we had an amazing time ! The house is so comfortable, and quiet, full of everything you need to plenty enjoy your holiday. Close from the see, Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas, Dumfries, Mabie... awesome. We didn't manage to meet Lynn though but they were so helpfull on the phone, and all the information were given on time. We will come back, definitively !

We had a brilliant stay at Birchlea Lodge! Lynn was an excellent host, very helpful, emailing us useful information about the lodge and the local area. We set off from home early as there had been weather warnings about snow storms sweeping the UK…. Lynn arranged for the lodge to be ready earlier than expected in case of bad weather, and texted to inform me of local conditions whilst we were on our journey. The lodge is delightful - light, warm, cosy yet spacious, nicely furnished, and in a lovely horse-shoe of 8 lodges, situated around a pond. No light pollution so the stars were amazing. Fabulous beaches within a few miles, pretty villages and whitewashed cottages everywhere. A very relaxing long weekend!

The lodge was perfect for us. It was warm and cosy and was exactly what we were looking for. The directions Lynn provided us with were spot on and had no trouble finding the place. In addition, Lynn was excellent at providing suggestions for local walks to do (loved the walk to Rockcliffe, taking in Rough Island and the Mote of Mark), where to hire bikes from (although we decided not to do so in the end) and places to eat (had a very nice fish and chips in the Anchor). Overall, we had a lovely relaxing weekend in a fantastic lodge and our host Lynn could not have been more accommodating. I would definitely recommend it to a friend (in fact have already done so) and may even return some day.

Owner of Birchlea Lodge, a self-catering log cabin. Dumfries & Galloway native and very happy to be back, after many years living away, mainly in Edinburgh. Passionate about the region, and Kippford in particular. When not looking after Birchlea and our guests there, I edit medical/health science books, try to keep fit, love theatre and film, and have been known to sail (quite badly!).
