In one word: WOW! If you get a chance to be in this beautiful region of Japan, (20 minutes drive from the Kurobe dam, an hour's drive from Matsumoto), you must stay at this private Onsen. The interior design is modern, with wooden floors, walls and ceiling. The sliding doors open onto a beautiful rock fish pond with the evergreen forest right behind it. There's a modern kitchen equiped with everything you need for cooking. But best of all, you have your own, interior hot water spring, which you can bath in whenever you feel like it. The house also has great floor heating, so we didn't really bother to get dressed in between dips in the spring and drinking Sake in the armchairs facing the pond. Natsumi speaks excellent English, responds quickly, and was very accomodating. We only have one word of warning: BEWARE! It's addictive--you may not be able to leave once you've stayed here.

The house is as described and the public onsen next door is great. Go see the nearby stunning dam just up the road where we saw snow monkeys. Overall we loved it and would visit again. Natsumi is a wonderful host and speaks perfect English.

Natsumi was a great host- excellent communication in English! The place was a dream after two weeks in Japanese cities in tiny apartments. The cabin is huge and has everything you could need- including your own private onsen. I would recommend renting a car to explore the area. Rental place by the station in Omachi, There is tons to see and it's a great access town to the northern Japanese Alps- without the crowds. Lots of hikes start from here. You can be in the alpine by noon and back for a massage and bath by 4pm :) Massages were great, and reasonably priced. Definatley recommend. Omachi itself was sleepy in September when I was there. But has a lovely feel of rural Japan. Much quieter than nearby Matsumoto. I can't wait to go back- next time will plan a multi day hike and stay overnight in the alpine huts/lodges- they are fantastic.
