Hornets Castle is a beautiful thatched cottage in a sheltered, hidden Dartmoor hamlet with gates directly on to the open moor. The house enjoys an elevated position within its own gardens with glorious surrounding views. It offers the epitome of peace with adventure on the doorstep.
Hornets Castle sits in a quiet Dartmoor hamlet surrounded by delightful gardens, with direct access to open moorland near the Two Moors Way.
A light, airy quirky house with high ceilings and gothic windows in most rooms.
This magical country cottage offers the perfect place from which to explore the ancient high moor and lush, beautiful valleys of the River Dart or to simply sit and enjoy the rural idyll while buzzards fly overhead and the sun sinks gently in the West. On clear nights, the sky becomes a blanket of stars!
Guest livery or group rides can be found a short stroll away at Babeny Farm Stables or you can book a walk with an experienced local guide, electric bike tours, outdoor pursuits, visit the beautiful South Hams beaches, the quaint local villages and towns such as Widecombe-In-The-Moor, Chagford, Tavistock, Ashburton and Totnes, the list goes on... or indulge in the many excellent local hostelries, restaurants and tea rooms including Riverford Field Kitchen.
Zugang für Gäste
Guests have access to all of the house and most of the outbuildings.
The ground floor of Hornets Castle is made up of an entrance hall with the main staircase, a large dining room opening into the delightful sitting room with a large wood burning stove set in an inglenook fireplace, a farmhouse kitchen with an Everhot range and Belfast sink and the family bathroom.
Free wifi is available on request. We have avoided providing a tv so you can enjoy the peace but usually have sufficient signal for streaming movies should you wish to bring your own device.
Upstairs are four bedrooms, two doubles and two smaller rooms, with the master featuring a small stone fireplace and breathtaking views of Corndon and Yar Tors.
Additional heating is through portable electric radiators.
A lockable store for climbing, biking or kayaking equipment is available, on request.
Well behaved pets are welcome by arrangement, but out of carpeted areas and on leads outside due to free range ponies, cattle and sheep in the immediate area. For this reason, we also request to keep gates closed or you may find a pony or several enjoying the garden!
The house is 'safe' for children and there is a delightful sturdy treefort at the top of the paddock, though obviously outdoor play will require appropriate supervision due to the natural dangers of Dartmoor. The ponies are lovely... and wild.
Please also no climbing on the granite walls, they are heavy!

'Hornets Castle', you say? Although we love name, we didn't give it to her!
We have deeds to the property back to 1707, and alas, we can't quite fathom who did! The locals say that other houses in the valley once enjoyed monikers such as 'Cocks-A-Peepin' and 'Little Hell' and 'Rogues Roost' can still be found down the lane.
A long history of Dartmoor characters abounds...
