Looking for something off the beaten track? Through Duara you can experience real Tanzanian small town lifestyle in Chuno, Mtwara. Duara is more than just accommodation: you stay with a local family, cook and eat with them and take part in the villagers' daily activities. Your stay benefits the host family and village directly, as part of the payment goes to a local community organisation. There are several host families who can usually each host two travellers.
The Duara Travels experience includes three meals per day. You will be served local food, the same eaten by your host family. You can help them cook it and learn about Tanzanian cuisine.
Note that there are several host families in the village. Once you make the booking, your English speaking Duara Contact, Thea, will arrange one of the host families for you. If you are a group of three or more, you might be split into separate host families. This neighbourhood is quite remote from the tourism hotspots, so you will most likely be the only travellers here.
If you wish to live in a charming little town, hang out on the beach, do some shopping at a local market and enjoy a tropical climate, come to Mtwara. Life and fruit are sweet here.
Our Duara circle of five families is located in a neighborhood called Chuno. They might be christians or muslims, but share the same positivity and interest to welcome you to their homes. In Tanzania people are proud to be originally from different tribes (140 in total in the country) but live in peace and harmony with each other.
Not all homes have electricity here, so bring a flashlight for night time and be open for an offline adventure. The neighborhood has all the essentials from candy shops to a pharmacy, but you can also pedal to the town with your rental bike in 15 minutes.
