Barker Creek Ranch is a lush oasis in a remote valley halfway between Las Vegas and Reno. At an elevation of 7000 feet at the mouth of a canyon leading down from Nevada's highest mountain, Mt. Jefferson, 12,000 ft.
The ranch house is 3000 sq feet with 3 formal bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 1 informal bedroom/sunroom, 1 great room with two single beds and an even bigger ( 1000 sq foot ) greatroom with couch, wood stove and Japanese style hot tub ( no bubbles, but plenty of hot water up to your chin ).
Barker Creek itself is a year round stream with endless hiking and exploring, some fishing for native trout, and opportunity for gold panning ( the USA's largest gold mine is a few miles away. The property encompasses 135 acres and includes dense canyons with loads of birch trees, pastures with cows, wild horses, sheep, rabbits and other animals and miles of trails and dirt roads.
The nearest town ( 1000 people ) is 10 miles away and has grocery, hardware and gas, plus a library, golf course, and 1 mile airstrip.
Around the area there is rock, gem and gold prospecting, plus ghost towns, motorbiking, solitude and silence. At 7000 feet, the weather is mild. Rarely hot, and from April to November seldom really cold although snow and rain can occur, the climate is very pleasant even when the valley below is warm.
If you are travelling from Las Vegas to Reno ( or vice versa ) Barker Creek Ranch adds only a few miles to the trip and if you are looking for the "real deal" Nevada wilderness experience with all the comforts, this is the place.
Wi-fi, and cell service is good, but no TV ( plenty of DVD movies however ).
