If your idea of a summer is an island rich with untouched nature and places which make you feel like you're the only person in the world – then Drvenik is your must destination. With its beautiful nature and neighboring pearls – Trogir , Šolta and Čiovo – this Central Dalmatian island guarantees relaxation you crave.
Typical Mediterranean vegetation, macchia and garigue, along with Aleppo pine and Holm oak forests perfectly adorn the green patchwork of olive orchards and vineyards.
Short history of Drvenik
The island was inhabited in the Middle Ages. On the island there is a central settlement Drvenik , settlement Grabule and several abandoned settlements . In the Middle Ages, the population mainly lived in those few settlements that are now abandoned. All the houses in abandoned settlements were constructed in accordance with the local tradition, from stone (walls – traditional stone walls, the roofs are covered with stone panels) . The population was mostly engaged in agriculture (growing olives and producing wine , growing carob , figs, wheat etc.) and keeping livestock (sheeps and goats). Donkeys were used for transport but nowadays unfortunately they do not exist on the island.
Over time, the population from other settlements was gradually moving to Drvenik and Grabule and begin to engage in fishing professionally.
From year 1945 onwards inhabitants start to gradually move from the island to the coast. They were moving to the continent due to one of two reasons: to study or for work.
Today the inhabitants of the island are mainly retired. The number of inhabitants in the winter months is between 60 and 80. For comparison, there were more pupils in the island’s school after World War II than inhabitants now.
