It is a stone building, which was built in the 30's and was used as a grocery store by my grandmother after her husband’s death, to keep her and her three children. It was abandoned in the 60’s and was converted into a house by my parents in the late 80’s. It is located in one of the most picturesque villages of the prefecture of Chania, Kefalas, and it overlooks the White Mountains.
The house comprises
- a Sitting room (with a stone coffee burner)
- One bedroom with one double bead
- One bedroom with two single beads
- Kitchen- dining room where you can prepare lunch/dinner/breakfast and enjoy it either at the small veranda admiring the view of the White Mountains in the background or in the dining room. There is also a single sofa bed and a fireplace there.
- One bathroom with Sink and Shower,
It features free parking for two cars
Apartment facilities: Flat-screen TV, DVD Iron, Ironing board, Wardrobe/Closet, Clothes rack, Hairdryer, Refrigerator, Electric kettle , Electric cooker/Stove, Toaster, electric citrus juicer, filter coffee maker , Kitchenware, washing machine, one floor fan and one floor standing fan Free toiletries, Towels, Linen, charcoal grill.
Size: 60 m²
It’s ideal for three to five-member families with children over 7 years of age
The width of the stone walls is 50cm, so they provide natural insulation
The ground floor of the stone building was used mainly as a grocery store in the past. But it was also used as a cafeteria (kafeneion). There is still a stone coffee burner, where coffee was roasted. At the semi basement, which was the storeroom, a stone wine press was built and there was also established a copper alembic for the distillation of the grape marc (the refuse of grapes after they had been pressed for winemaking) so “raki” the traditional Cretan snap was produced there. The same place was also used, for a while, for cheese making, where my grandmother produced traditional Cretan cheese with the milk which the shepherds of the area supplied her.
To emphasize aesthetically the age of the building, the outer walls have remained unpainted for a long time so that the passage of time can be impressed upon them.
The building architecture belongs to the style of the late Neoclassicism and it was renovated by ANTONIS NOUKAKIS ARCHITECTS
It has been decorated traditionally with some modern elements.
