Clais na Trá, our holiday home in Cromane, is located in a Special Protection Area close to the Wild Atlantic Way, on the scenically-magnificent west coast of Ireland. Experience stunning uninterrupted sea and mountain views in a peaceful setting. A superb base for a 'get away from it all' holiday, a quiet retreat, or spending quality time with family or friends out and about, or trying something new.
Unwind and relax. Enjoy this magnificent setting. Make some memories.
Clais na Trá, named after the fishing dock it overlooks, is a traditional bungalow with four comfortable bedrooms offering accommodation for 6 people, situated towards the end of a quiet cul-de-sac/single track road. It is just 30 minutes' drive from Kerry Airport and five minutes from Dooks Golf Club.
Enjoy stunning views of Castlemaine Harbour, Inch and then the wild Atlantic Ocean beyond from the front, with fields and views of the Macgillycuddy Reeks, at the rear.
The sitting room looks out on to Castlemaine Harbour (as do three of the bedrooms) and comfortably seats five. There is a woodburning stove which can be lit if the evenings turn cool. The stove will be prepared for your arrival with some fuel provided. (Additional fuel is easily obtained at the local store.). A Blue Tooth speaker enables guests to plug in their mobile phones and enjoy music of their choice. This is a cosy setting for re-living the day's stand out moments, relaxing with a good book, listening to music, browsing the Internet or planning the next day's activities.
Having a good night's sleep is an important part of any holiday. All the single beds have anti-allergy duvets, and all beds have electric blankets, adding a little touch of luxury for tired bodies turning in after a day's sightseeing or walking in the hills.
The kitchen-diner has an electric kettle, electric fan oven and a gas hob, a four-slice toaster and a standard microwave. There is a generous fridge-freezer. The charming traditional family farmhouse table will seat six people. The kitchen has all the equipment needed for preparing simple meals and local supermarkets stock an appetising range of freshly-produced convenience foods, as well as the local specialities such as fresh seafood, for which the area is renowned. If dining out appeals, Jack's Coastguard Restaurant is about a mile away and Killorglin (5 miles) and Glenbeigh (8 miles) both have a wide variety of eateries to suit all pockets. Please note there is no dishwasher - only the human variety!
The modern bathroom has a shower over the bath as well as a separate hand set. A non-slip mat is supplied. This must be used at all times when taking a bath or shower as the bath surface is very slippy when wet.
The utility room is accessed via the back door of the house and is the location for an additional sink, the washing machine, steam iron, ironing board, clothes pegs. It is also the place for hanging coats and leaving outdoor shoes.
Lawns at the front and back of the house provide plenty of space for relaxing outside on the four folding garden chairs (included for guest use) taking in the wonderful views and having a glass of wine on a summer's evening. Previous guests have enjoyed a barbecue using disposable barbecues which are readily available locally. (We ask that guests take responsibility for disposing of the barbecue and leave no trace.) Because of the house's elevated and exposed position, be prepared to pop on a layer or two even on the sunniest of evenings. We mention this for those who might be especially interested in star gazing on a clear night, in an area with very little light pollution.

Weitere wichtige Infos
The holiday home is situated in a very quiet, peaceful location. Guests need to be mindful that those involved in the main occupations here (fishing and farming) work hard and often have to get up very early in the morning. This is why it is a location which is totally unsuitable for loud groups and if returning to the home late at night, doing so as quietly as possible is essential. Any group creating a nuisance or disturbance to others will be politely asked to leave without any refund whatsoever. We simply ask our guests to respect the character of the location and be considerate to the people who live here.
Shopping: the nearest store for groceries is Hannah Mary's Country Store which is approx 2.5 miles from the holiday home. In Killorglin, there is a choice ranging from speciality produce (Quinlan's Fish Shop in the Square is highly recommended), bakeries, hardware to the well-known chain stores such as Supervalu, Eurospar and Aldi. We think spending half an hour familiarising yourself with their produce is a worthwhile investment when planning meals for your holiday if eating out is not always possible. And there is a vast choice in Killorglin and Glenbeigh for eating out too!
There is an information folder in the house for guest use but feel free to ask for information about where to eat, places to go and things to do. We would be delighted to help.
As this is a 'get away from it all' destination, the holiday home does not have a TV. We provide some board games and playing cards for guests' amusement. Switching off devices and enjoying being out of reach is very much encouraged but guests have the choice as the house has free wi-fi access.
Some of the furniture has been in the family for a very long time and we are fairly precious about it so would not recommend the house as being suitable for children under 12 years of age. This is as much for the benefit of adults who should not have to fret about children's high-spirited behaviour inside the property while on holiday. Also, there is no fireguard surrounding the woodburning stove. Those unfamiliar with stoves should be aware that the stove becomes extremely hot after being lit and can inflict serious burns if touched without using the protective mitts (provided).
Although the house comfortably sleeps six, with only one bathroom it may be more convenient to have fewer guests, especially if accustomed to living in a house with more than one bathroom. In addition, there are two sturdy grab rails in the shower area but guests should note that it is still necessary to climb over the edge of the bath to use the shower. The grab rail is positioned to assist in this respect but it may still not be easy for those with restricted mobility.
Please note that the fields surrounding the property are not accessible to guests. Cattle may be grazing there during the summer months.
The house has its original single-glazed windows, handmade in teak. If the outside temperature is much cooler than the inside of the house, condensation may occur. It's not the house's fault: it's science and the fact that the central heating system is excellent!
Only guests who checked in originally are permitted to stay at the property.
