Scenic, private 2-bedroom/1-bath historic cottage on an organic farm in the heart of Valle Crucis, 8 minutes from the original Mast Store. Close to several gorgeous hiking trails, fishing, and horseback riding. Located about 20 minutes from downtown Banner Elk, Boone, and Blowing Rock.
This funky, historic cottage, approximately 700 square feet, is a stand-alone building, entrance up one flight of stairs, across a 1-lane gravel road from our farmhouse. The cottage was converted from a tobacco barn originally built in the 1940s.
The simple kitchen is fully equipped with refrigerator/freezer, gas stove/oven, microwave, table settings for 6 people, and intimate dining table with 4 chairs.
The cottage features a living room with a bay window looking up the hillside, bathroom with separate shower and large claw-footed tub, master bedroom with king-size bed, and second bedroom with porch access and 2 full-size beds (one bed is in a small sleeping loft, accessible by ladder). With the cabin's eclectic décor, we support local artists and artisans. A collection of locally handcrafted items will be provided, including hand-made soap, locally roasted coffee from Espresso News, herbal tea from the garden, and fresh eggs from the farm.
This is a very quiet place completely surrounded by mountains and forest, on a country road at the convergence of two creeks, with wonderful outdoor activities in every season and tuned in to the rhythms of the farm (our ducks and chickens range freely, and are sure to put a smile on your face). If you just want to get away and spend quiet time in a beautiful place, this is the spot for you – it’s a perfect place to dive into a good book or craft project. There’s no TV, no telephone, and cellphone reception inside the cabin is spotty, although a quick walk/drive up to the top of the hill or down to the valley usually results in a better connection. In case of emergency, phone and wifi is available a few steps away at the farmhouse (cottage guests can sometimes pick up a wifi signal, but it’s spotty).
Be sure to bring good walking shoes if you want to try some of the trails. I also recommend you bring layered clothing and especially jacket/windbreaker for nighttime and mornings, as Valle Crucis gets chilly, even in the summer months. Iron/board, hairdryer, and small charcoal grill (BYO charcoal) are available upon request. Cotton linens and towel sets for the bathroom and kitchen are provided.
Situated between Banner Elk, Boone, and Blowing Rock (approximately 20 minutes from each community), guests have access to multiple dining, arts, and outdoor opportunities. The Watauga County Farmer’s Market at Horn in the West in Boone runs May - Oct: 8am – Noon, November: 9am – Noon. In Valle Crucis, our very own Waxwing Farm has what might be North Carolina’s most beautiful farm-stand every Friday afternoon during the summer, from 3-7pm.
This place is best suited for no more than 2 adult couples. Parties are not allowed. If you are considering traveling with a pet, please talk to us. All pets must be arranged in advance, and pets may never be left alone in the cottage or allowed off-leash outside ($25 additional fee/pet).Private individual and group yoga sessions are also available upon request for an additional fee.

Our guests enjoy a stand-alone building with private entrance, up one short flight of stairs. Parking is off the road, in front of the barn, approximately 200 feet away from the cottage (loading and unloading can be done by the door). Please note, because it is a working farm, all guests will be requested to accept complete responsibility for their own risks on the farm, holding harmless the farm owners/operators. The farm land is not open for exploration but you will have access to their fresh produce and eggs!
Weitere wichtige Infos
We are able to greet our guests upon arrival (with a warm welcome and a big smile!) or leave a key for self check-in (especially for late/odd-hour arrivals).
We can leave you completely alone, or we can provide you with information about local hikes, restaurants, fishing holes, attractions and happenings. You will have access to a hiking trail on the property that leads to 44 acres of mountain forest, perfect for a fun morning of exploring. Since the cottage is on a working farm, fresh produce and eggs (both duck and chicken) are available seasonally. Information about Waxwing Farms will be in the cabin, so that you can easily contact us if you are interested in buying farm fresh food! Private individual and group yoga sessions are also available upon request for an additional fee.
We are glad you are here with us!
My interest are vast but mainly I love learning to find the joy every moment of life. I received my Bachelors Degree from Appalachian State University in Appropriate Technology (renewable energy system design). I now work part time at Appalachian State University as well as part time at a restaurant in Boone. I feel very lucky to live in this beautiful area of the Appalachian Mountains rich with culture that I find so enthralling. I am also a yoga instructor and am now training to become an Alexander Technique teacher.
