Sparta Gaia Retreat is an authentic 18th c. House complex, which comprises 4 independent apartments with private bathrooms and kitchenette that can accomodate 12-14 persons. PARKING: The villa has its own parking area. WASHING MACHINE available for your free laundry. AIR CONDITION and fan. WIFI: at the village cafes and tavernas. GARDEN: Pick up almonds, figs, grapes for your breakfast from the garden trees; organically grown and watered by rain water from the cistern. WOOD OVEN: Grill local lamb chops, smoked sausage with orange or bake your own pizza in the traditional outdoor wood oven. TERRACE: Practise your morning workouts on the terrace overlooking the top of Mt.Taygetos and Cape Tainaron. AUTHENTICITY: Respecting the house that inspired in me the love for archaeology and the values of the Greek earth, my main concern was to secure the guests’ comfortable and unforgettable stay, while preserving the old mansion’s authenticity; the traditional -bioclimatic- architecture of the buildings complex intact: the stone walls, the two centuries old roof tiles, the cedar window blankets, the doors, the wooden cypress floor, the cistern, the outdoor wood oven, the “liakos” veranda, and the pergola with the old vine-arbour, the wall colors: ochra, blue, asbestos white, the dry stone fences around the two acres local herbs and almond trees garden, and the “shepherd’s house”, a typical 17th c. building.

Agios Demetrios village is centrally located, so you can easily reach the south, west and east coasts. All distances are in car drive time from Agios Dimitrios.
SOUTH BEACHES, LACONIAN GOLF
The closest is at Kokkinia (20 min), a sandy beach followed by many secluded coves. At the old tavern there, you can enjoy an ouzo with fish mezes. The sunsets are dramatic.
Continuing, to Elia port (25 min) you can rest at the cafés and ouzo taverns.
At Viandini there is a beach bar and a restaurant overlooking the cove.
Tigania is a long beach with a tavern and a beach bar.
More quiet is Makrygialos approached by a dirty road.
Plytra (25 min) and Karavostasi are sandy beaches next to a submerged ancient town with many fish taverns.
From there within another 15 min drive you reach a kilometers long beach, Demonia with enclosed bays.
At Archaggelos and Marathias tavernas you can enjoy a good meal after swimming.
Continuing direction Neapoli you can get the boat to Elafonisos island (60 min). Simos sandy beach on Elafonisos is one of the most beautiful in Greece.
WEST, LACONIAN GOLF
Gytheion bay (45 min) with sandy beaches is the entrance to Eastern Mani. Mani is unique area in Greece with fortified tower houses and pebble coves.
EAST, MYRTOON SEA
Gerakas (60 min) is Greece’s longest fiord and a fish village where you can enjoy a spaghetti with local shrimps or lobster.
Kyparissi (60 min) is a picturesque village with beautiful beaches.
Vlychada, Balougeri and Fokianos (60 min) are the less known gems. Clear blue waters, ideal for snorkeling, in a landscape of wild beauty.
DISCOVER MOUNTAIN PARNON
Mt. Parnon (15 min) is one of the less visited mountains of Greece that has kept an incredible variety of rare flora and many traditional villages. Drink spring water from the fountains next to the road, visit the traditional villages, and hike the trails
Mari (15 min): Water springs and a clean river next to the village.
In Kremasti (20 min) you will find a tavern with traditional mezes and home made sweets.
At Kosmas’ square (30 min) relax under the rich shadow of the old plane trees and enjoy your coffee with a galoktobouriko sweet.
Locals in the afternoon walk from Agios Dimitrios to the next village, Niata (30 min). You may end up at Niata’s square for a drink.
Hiking the 30 min trail around Monemvasia’s rock (25 min) you can enjoy the unique flora and beautiful views.
At Plytra (25 min) there is a 90 min trail up to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula.
At Polydroso (60 min) choose a trail from the marked network to hike in Mt. Parnon’s forests.
Tainaron (90 min) is the southern most Cape of Europe and the entrance to the ancient Under World. A 30 min trail leads to the light house.
A 60 min trail of stunning views along the coast of Maleas Peninsula (90 min) ends up at Agia Irini Byzantine Monastery.
VISIT ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES
Monemvasia (40 min): A castle town preserving the Byzantine architecture.
Geraki (15 min): Authentic Byzantine castle town.
Plytra (25 min): Submerged ancient town with clearly visible ruins.
Ancient Sparta (60 min): The town of the Spartans.
Mystras (60 min): Palatial residence of the last Byzantine emperors.
Menelaion (60 min): ruins of the Palace of Menelaus and beautiful Helen.
Pavlopetri (60 min): Prehistoric submerged town, approached from the beach opposite to Elafonisos.
Many historical monasteries with remarkable frescoes are within an hour’s reach: Agioi Saranta, Elona Monastery. Many byzantines chapels are in the area. The closest ones at Apidea (5 min).
EXPLORE THE CAVES
Avgo: Prehistoric cave next to Ag. Dimitrios, not touristically exploited yet.
Diros (60 min): An underground river complex forming stalagmite scenes of breathtaking beauty.
Kastanias’ Cave (90 min) has stalagmite formations of beautiful colors and a beach next to it.
