Die Unterkunft
This house has been in our family since it was first built 40 years ago, it never ceases to rekindle fond memories of our upbringing in this unique part of the world. "Unique", a powerful word but this area has a coastline that you will not find anywhere else in the world. This is a spacious and comfortable home with an upstairs bathroom/toilet/shower and a downstairs toilet and hand basin. There are 2 double bedrooms with king size beds, one of the double rooms also has single bed. The third bedroom has had the integral cupboard removed, making it large enough for two single beds. The lounge/dining room is the width of the house, with lots of natural light. There is a double sofa bed downstairs and 2 further z beds, one fits in the hallway and the other in the dining area. The kitchen has all you need for a comfortable stay should you wish to cook and eat in. There is a small grassed area to the rear that is fenced off enabling little ones to roam freely and safely and parking is right outside the back gate.

Zugang für Gäste
The whole house, the garden and free parking to the rear

Lage

Easington, England, Vereinigtes Königreich

Easington – Billy Elliot country, if you've seen the film then take a short car ride through the colliery and see how many locations you can spot from the original movie.

Easington has been around for some time and there is evidence of the village having been an important pre-Norman Conquest site, architectural fragments (dating from as early as the 8th century) have been found within the fabric of St Mary's Church.

The Durham Heritage Coast is on your doorstep, well, you can see it from the upstairs window of our house, it's about three minutes by car to the site of the former coal mine where you can park then walk North or South along the cliff tops. There is a “history footpath” from the car park at Easington Colliery leading up to the “cage” on the hill. The cage was originally used to take miners underground and serves as a reminder of the Colliery's past.

Food - The Half Moon will provide you with traditional pub grub, it's a five minute walk from the house. Go out of the front door turn right, cross the road and walk straight ahead to the Village Green on your right, turn right and walk across the green, the Moon is in front of you. Indian, Italian and Chinese restaurants can be found in Seaham, Durham and surrounding area. There are loads of take-away fast food providers nearby who will deliver for a nominal fee, we have a selection of menus in the house.

Places to visit nearby include Durham City and The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and Saint Cuthbert of Durham usually known as Durham Cathedral and home of the Shrine of Saint Cuthbert. There are beautiful walks along the river side at Durham, you can start your walk, follow the loop around the base of the castle and cathedral and end up almost where you started. We like the 10 hectare University Botanic Garden which is set amongst beautiful mature woodlands on the southern outskirts of Durham city and the Oriental Museum nearby. In addition, there is an abundance of eateries in the City centre

At Seaham Harbour you will see “Tommy”. Standing at 9 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 1.2 tonnes this is a truly amazing and moving statue dedicated to WW1 soldiers. The artist, Ray Lonsdale, has captured every detail down to the veins in Tommy's hands. Seaham is also famous for its “Sea Glass”, we've met people from California, Canada and Hungary on the beach looking for the stuff. The "Look Out" in the marina is a great place for a cup of coffee with great views of the famous Seaham lighthouse and beyond...

Nearby Sunderland has a museum dedicated to the region and just over the River Wear you will find the National Glass Museum that give live glass blowing demonstrations throughout the day.

Hartlepool Marina is an easy to reach location for food and a stroll. The National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool is based at Jackson Dock, where you can also see HMS Trincomalee, the oldest British warship still afloat.

Beamish Open Air Museum, Hadrian's (Roman) Wall and the Durham Dales, all are within easy reach by car.

Unique fact - Easington is the only place on earth with dolomitic limestone cliffs on the coastline.

Uninteresting fact - Easington was the home of Nicholas Breakspear, Pope Adrian IV, for a time.

Useless fact - Easington has the UK's lowest population of Jedi Knights.

Pointless fact - the eldest of three brothers who lived at this house used to store his hang-glider to the left hand side of the stairs inside this home, look for the marks on the wall.

Pauline - (written by Bill) is the business end of the partnership. Dr P, as she is known in certain circles, has left the health service but now works even harder than before. When she isn't running her shop she can be found organising rental properties, up-cycling furniture, knitting, sewing, glass painting and constantly cleaning - anything that's dirty! She never switches on the TV, leaving me at least one daily task to carry out. Bill - we're both from Billy Elliot country, well, that's where they shot a good part of the movie, in Easington Colliery, County Durham UK. Our favourite destinations include Scotland and the Greek Islands. I also like Japan. Other things you don't really need to know about me, I could be thinner but lack will power, I could be younger but was born a bit too early to qualify.
