Dear Amanda, we thank you again for staying at Evelyn Cottage. Unfortunately, the Blue Mountains and surrounding areas experienced one of its coldest winters in recent memory. Our home is a restored workers cottage which is almost 100 years old; plumbing is external and even though the pipes are insulated, as you have mentioned the last night of your stay the temperature went down to -4! Our neighbours informed us that their pipes (in much newer homes, froze, as well). Our apologies for this inconvenience, but occasionally it’s just a part of mountain life. Indeed you had a very interesting morning. My neighbour called me again and informed me that you tried to thaw out the pipes yourself with our garden hose and a kettle full of boiling water; this is an absolute no, no...burst pipes would’ve been very expensive to fix! If you had called me immediately, you would have been advised to turn up the heating and given a later check out to compensate for the inconvenience.
