Hi and welcome to Rotterdam! 1 of the 10 cities in the World you have to see (according to New York Times)
Now 10 years ago I started working in Rotterdam. However, I still live in Belgium and commute from Antwerp to Rotterdam by train. As I have meetings for work early in the morning and like my job at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam I recently (2013) decided to buy a pied-a-terre in Rotterdam where I sleep once or twice a week (but not when you would book the appartement)
Recently, a friend told me I should check out airbnb to invite guests that are looking for a place in Rotterdam. I found the concept interesting and I like to meet people from all over the world. March 2014 I started to advertise my apartment on airbnb. Now almost 2 years later, I have had guests from Poland and Tsjech republic, Hong-kong (3x), Singapore, Australia, USA, Italy, India, Netherlands, UK, Belgium etc.
At my appartment there is wifi, an Imac, A TV, apple-TV (so you can rent a movie), a home cinema system (DVD/blue-ray player with beamer on the wall), espresso machine, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, fridge...
As travelers want to pack as little as possible, I provide towels and all the common toiletries, hair dryer, umbrella... I have 5 OV chipcards (the cards on which you can charge euros and have to use to jump on and off public transport). Guests can use them. I just ask them to reload the card after use (or leave the amount used in cash).
If you want to have a drink at my place: Coffee (great espresso machine) and thea is for free. I have a choice of great Belgian beers (yes I am Belgian) and a fine collection of whiskey(y)s that you can try at purchase price.
Rotterdam as your base is perfect if you want to visit the Netherlands and Belgium: With the fast Intercity IC Direct train your are in Amsterdam in 30 minutes and at Amsterdam/schipol airport in 20 minutes. To Belgium with the normal train to Antwerp takes 1h20, to Brussels 2h00 or to Ghent 2h10 etc. With the more expensive fast train (Thalys) it takes 30 minutes to Antwerp.
Public transport in Rotterdam:
You get everywhere in 15 minutes. Easiest way is to use 1 or more of the OV chipcards I have. This precharged chipcard you need to use if you want to jump on and off public transport. Just check-in when you jump on, and check-out when you get of. Please reload the card for the amount you used after use (or leave the amount used in cash when you check out at my place). Remember: You need 1 card for each person
For a change and very spectacular you can use the water-taxi (the yellow speedboats on the river). You can call them to pick you up at Delfshaven (5min walk from my place) and they will bring you directly over the water to e.g. New-York Hotel or the spectacular new building called "de Rotterdam" with a very nice restaurant all at the south-end of the Erasmus bridge.
As I have been a fanatic long distance runner: If you need advice on were to run, I can suggest several very nice tracks
If you want to have advice on where to eat. Just ask me (and let your budget know :))
