Carl and Gretchen Valdez designed La Lomita, an efficient, solar adobe 2 br/2 bath home, with hospitality and spirituality in mind. It sits on 9 acres, is very private, yet convenient to stores, restaurants and hospital. Think healing, rest, mystery.

Der Wohnraum

La Lomita is in the center of wonderful northern New Mexican treasures; the healing waters of Ojo Caliente mineral springs, Abiquiu's Georgia O'Keefe scenery, the native splendors of Taos and Santa Fe, the artists' trail of Chimayó and Truchas, historical Los Alamos and Bandalier National monument, Puye Cliffs, and more.

Zugang für Gäste

In addition to the1530 square foot adobe home, guests may wander and climb nine acres, including the Black Mesa which forms the back of our property.

When you approach this house it seems kind of small and ordinary - at least that's how it looked to me. Boy, was I wrong! The house is beautifully laid out and has a huge living room with a very well stocked kitchen. Lots of helpful information on where to find things. The bedroom is large too and everything looks put together with a lot of dedication. I loved the art and the local artifacts and the weaving. Also the skylights. Some other things I appreciated: the stools at the kitchen counter. One was perfect for someone of my short and slim size! Often they are much too low. And: the ice cube trays let go of the cubes easily. Sometimes you have to use a lot of force to get them to release the cubes (needless to say: I am not strong). I liked the hummingbird feeders. I loved to sit outside watching the birds. This is a very peaceful place. I walked around a bit but mostly I was sitting on the porch reading and looking at the hummers. I heard some more birds singing a soft song but saw only a chipmunk. No other wildlife. The rocks behind the house are spectacular. They may not seem like that when they are in the shade but wait till the sun shines on them! There are neighbors not very far away but they don't bother you. You can hear the highway in the daytime when you are sitting outside. The house is very well isolated so inside it is always quiet. When I arrived I had problems with the internet and with the tv. I tried to call the manager on her cell phone but my ATT phone doesn't work here - neither does my ATT hotspot. This seems to be Verizon country. So I called her landline from the landline in the house (which only allows local calls) and left her a message and she came over a few hours later when we both determined the internet signal was weak - and that neither of us could figure out the tv. Jan called Carl and he called the internet company and they will be sending a mechanic in the next 4-5 days which of course was not very helpful to me because I was staying only two days. Carl offered to arrange a neighbor to come and help me figure out the tv the next morning but by then I had figured it out myself. However this man called me at quarter to nine (nice timing, some people think 'morning' means 11:30 AM) asking if he should come over. All in all I was *very* pleased with the communication with Carl and Gretchen and with Jan as well! Problems with the internet can happen anywhere (I have had them happen in my own house several times) and Carl did everything he could to try and make it right. I had already composed this review and planned to upload...

The area is scenic and gorgeous! Just ask for directions and mule marker ahead if time as is easy to get lost. It is two hours from skiing and Taos and one hour from Santa Fe. The views aren awesome. One issue is only one bed and the rest ate foutons for the price for fuve people seemed uscould use some real beds. The artwork isnide us also matching all else. Overall recommend! Make sure you do not get lost there like us!!! Ask for directions ahead of time as there is no coverage. The nearby spa is magical outdoor experience.

Hi, Sevdalina, Thank you for your feedback that we take seriously. Regarding the communication, I can see where it would have been frustrating (my word, not yours) by your not getting an answer on your first try to Jan and then to me, especially after a full day of travel from Dallas and the hour of the night. I'm glad you followed up with me via texting so I could respond, and it was fortunate that you called as soon as you were not sure of where you were in relation to the house, because you were very close. Compared with the Dallas/Fort Worth area, we certainly are REMOTE; that is something I will look at again in the description of our home. Even though you are the first person to mention it in terms of what I perceive as a surprise, it bears another look. We are sorry that the directions were not clear to you. Likewise, our view of linens and towels was different from your expectations. We will take a critical look and replace "old and stained" as needed. Thank you. Regarding futons and beds, we do not know how we could be clearer about what we offer. We believe the price fits with this part of New Mexico for similar offerings. What I recognize in you is that, from the time of your first inquiry to your arrival, you had the positive trait of not being afraid to ask questions. Whether it is with family or friends, the one who does the bulk of the work in arranging travel (you) is the one who takes the heat if something isn't exactly right. That said, Gretchen and I are glad you chose us and appreciate your recommendation and comments. Be well, stay fresh. Carl Valdez

it was an amazing experience! Amazing views and a great place! The kitchen was well equipped.... everything from spices to dishes. The place is exactly as it appears in the picture, I could say... even more wonderful than the photos! it was a great place for my parents to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Its located at a 15-20minute drive from Ojo Caliente, so its very convenient and the price its affordable. We will definitely consider booking this place for our future visits. ♡

Marian Jazmin, We appreciate your review and are glad you treated your parents to La Lomita and to what the area had to offer on the occasion of their 25th. We'll keep in mind your suggestion on the grill. We grill so infrequently, that we get by with "tiny"! We hope you come back soon. Carl and Gretchen

This was our first time using Airbnb and we are very glad we did. Communication with Carl and Gretchen was friendly, prompt and relative. The manager, Jan, was cordial and gave us precise directions. La Lomita was even better in person! A very nice house with all the amenities we needed and very tasteful personal touches that made the house feel warm and inviting. We loved the spectacular views and enjoyed watching the hummingbirds.

Host was gracious and kind; home beautiful and well-furnished with everything a traveler could possibly need. Our family enjoyed the quiet back porch, gorgeous views and peaceful surroundings. We also loved exploring the mesa! Home was immaculately clean and a joy to stay in. Highly recommend.

La Lomita is the perfect retreat house nestled in the hills along the rio just outside Ojo Caliente. Well equipped and very comfortable with a great porch. I would definitely stay at the little knoll again!

We didn't have the pleasure of meeting Artie and Leah, but our home manager said, "Artie and Leah were delightful. Very kind and loved La Lomita. Left the house perfect," which pleases us to no end. We thank them for choosing our home for their retreat.

We raised our children (biological, step, adopted, foster and grand) in Minneapolis, but after having traveled for many years to Colorado and New Mexico to visit Carl's father's Spanish-speaking side of the family, we decided to build our retirement home close to family in New Mexico.

Both of us are retired teachers in various disciplines with a combined 57 years with students, and Carl, as an ordained deacon in the Catholic church, continues to serve in a bilingual capacity (English and Spanish). He is also a chaplain for the Minneapolis Police Department. Both are dedicated to grandchildren, especially Gretchen, who also dedicates time practicing tai-chi and teaching it to us "older folk". She also reads mystery novels, writes grants and assists in developing leadership in the Spanish-speaking community.

Because of our close ties especially with grandkids in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and Carl's ministry (i.e. not retiring!), we decided to stay put and open our home to guests. The advantage is that the mechanics (especially plumbing), cleanliness, and the security of the house and neighborhood by frequent use make for a good investment. Of course, we are pleased that so many individuals and families have been able to share what we enjoy in this home away from home. Truly, it is a shared experience that helps our guests, the neighborhood and area.

Also, the landscaping and building projects that Carl does is a helpful change from both the pleasure and demands of ministerial service.
