The possibilities are endless, whether your needs are recreational, business, writers retreat, temporary housing or romantic couples retreat, JUNIPER LANE COTTAGE, 'The Place Beyond the Cedars', may be the place for you.

Der Wohnraum

Long hidden behind a row of cedars & at the end of a dead end road, Juniper Lane Cottage is ideally located just North of Des Moines, (on the West side of Ankeny), adjacent to Saylorville Lake with bike trails, beach, marina, camping, trekking, picnicking all literally steps away. Part suburban (kids, dogs, mowers & construction can be heard), and part private oak savannah, all this in a beautiful woodsy setting surrounding a charming, cozy, newly renovated 600 SF cottage built in 1935. ‘Storybook’ by all accounts.
Downtown Des Moines and the tony Jordan Creek area are just 20 minutes away. Iowa State University is 25 minutes to the North and Des Moines Area Community College is just minutes away. Both I-35 and I-80 are equally accessible minutes away.
The cottage consists of four rooms on the main floor LR, BR, galley kitchen & 3 piece bath. The LR is sizable with a lounge sofa, rocker, gas FP, bistro table for dining, window seat tucked into cozy corner window. The BR is a very bright and open room w/a Select Comfort Sleep Number (P5) queen bed on an adjustable base, double hung closets, large dresser. The kitchen is a fully equipped galley style kitchen.w/gas range, new bottom freezer refrig., micro, toaster oven, coffee pot, with all necessary pots/pans/plates/glasses etc.; 1 bath w/shower, linens and hair dryer provided. We are on our own well & septic systems. Also available are an ironing board, iron, clock radio, CD player, vacuum, flash lights, space heater and fan. Ample quality bedding, & electric blanket for cooler weather stays. The property comes equipped w/ cabled HDTVs in LR, BR & office, WiFi, Starz & Netflix.

Contact host: For guests doing business travel and needing some work space, a home office is available in the half story. The room consists of a long desk, chair, file drawer space, book shelves, lots of drawers and two beds and a small closet. A dormer window with the best ‘book reading’ spot on the property. There is ample space for computers, printers, cable hook-ups and room for supplies. Additional charges may apply.

*Check with Host if interested in month-to-month accommodation (This is not always available) or if additional sleeping is desired (additional charges will apply).

A detached two car garage offers guests covered parking for one car, a secure storage area for bulky items or bikes and additional parking is available off the drive. Large wrap around patio with views into woods, gas grill, hammock, picnic table, lounge chairs, outdoor fire pit area w/ lots of fire wood.

Critters abound. The property is a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. The lake draws eagles, pelicans, osprey, all manner of geese and our back woods have been home to nesting Barred owls the past few summers. We even have minks (descendants from escapees from a neighboring, now closed mink farm) terrorizing the nesting birds and bunnies. The grounds have been beautifully laid out with shady plantings and landing spots are throughout.

Recreation: This location offers connectivity to numerous biking options. Cycle out the drive due West & connect to trails all around Saylorville which connects South to ride into downtown Des Moines or North to Big Creek State Park. Cycle from drive going due North & connect to High Trestle Trail to Madrid or go East to Ankeny trails network.

Year round recreation, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling during snowy winter weather.
We deck out for the Holidays!!!

A beautiful woodsy setting yet close & convenient to all you need, groceries, restaurants, medical care, and shopping.

(URL HIDDEN) * "UP NORTH"

There's a lot of talk about "Up North".
It's the place everyone seems to want to go escape the pressures and the frantic pace of everyday life.
But where is "Up North"?
For "Up North" is not so much a location as a state of mind.
So how do you know when you've arrived "Up North"?
When you feel the cares of the world begin to slip away.....
When you find yourself breathing a little deeper because the air seems purer somehow.....
When you notice that the sky is bluer, the pines are taller and the people smile a lot more.....
It's then that you know you're "UP North"

We can't give you loons on the lake, but we'll do our best so this will happen for you.
It happens for me every day I go there. Julie

Absolutely no smoking inside the cottage. (Host is extremely allergic(URL HIDDEN)Sorry, we love all manner of pets, but we just can not accommodate pets at this time. The cottage is just too small.

What is present in the cottage when you arrive stays in the cottage. We have tried very hard to accessorize the entire cottage with interesting items that contributes to entire essence & charm of the place. Many of the items are original to the cottage & do fall into the ‘antique’ category, not to speak of the sentimental category. We would like them there so you all can enjoy them, now and in the future. (exception: any food items are there for you to use & enjoy & therefore fair game)

Same for the grounds and gardens. No removal of garden art or plant materials. But if anyone has an overwhelming urge to pull a few weeds or water a droopy plant, I would be eternally grateful.

This is a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat so we honor all critters, so no sniping or plinking of feathered, furry, hoppity, or slithery things.

We are part of an oak savannah, with that comes the dreaded ‘PI’, poison ivy. We do our best to control the poison ivy in the mowed yard & garden areas but enter the woods & meadow at your own risk because it is everywhere.

Privacy and the quality of the stay are of paramount importance to us as hosts. Yard maintenance will be scheduled around guests needs then possible but during periods of little or no rain it may be necessary for the owners to be present some each day to water to sustain the gardens and many plantings. (Entry into the cottage would not be required.)

Julie's little cabin is absolutely wonderful! It is a cozy, little place with delightful touches inside and out. Julie is welcoming and helpful. Information is accurate and Julie provides a notebook of helpful tips. The location is great; it is peaceful in the woods but close to a variety of destinations. There are many restaurants nearby, local wineries to visit, and the heart of Des Moines is not far away. A great find! My husband and I were there for the weekend and highly recommend it!!

People, you need to have the Juniper Lane Cottage experience!! Owner, Julie Christian, has been extremely meticulous in making sure you have a fairy tale experience at this wonderful property!! We will be finishing our long Labor Day getaway with complete satisfaction---far exceeding our expectations. Every nook and cranny has a surprise element for you---both inside and outside. She did not miss one aspect of "fairy-tale-ism"!! My favorite part is the long lounge sofa facing the fairy tale gas, electronic start fireplace with the big screen TV above. My wife's favorite part is the incredible attention to detail by Julie to making sure this makes us feel like we are having a Fairy Tale escape. If you are going to be coming anywhere near Des Moines or are anywhere within 4 hours of Des Moines, be sure to get this awesome experience!!

This little cottage is perfect for a weekend getaway! Adorably decorated and immaculately maintained, it has everything you could need: well-stocked kitchen, comfy bed, cozy living space, and amazing outdoor spaces. It is also located close to Saylorville Lake, as well as several state parks, and not too far from downtown Des Moines and all that the city offers. Would definitely come back, and I have already recommended to several friends!

I bought this property when I was still in my 20s in 1977 & I've had a love affair with it ever since. Career demands required me to move a bit around the country but I could never sell it. Ed & I lived in KCMO for many years & we used it as a week end place because our families were here. We moved back to the area & after all these years I had my chance to make this place into all I knew it could be. We have spent the last 3+ years working to that end. Now our greatest joy is to share this with others who may come to love it too.

Besides being devoted to JLC, I'm a Polk County Master Gardener & Master Conservationist, Iowa State University Extension Services; Member-Iowa Arboretum; and Iowa Heritage Foundation.

Favorite Motto : "She believed she she did".

Favorite poster in my workshop at the Cottage:
"I know I am in my own little world, but.....they know me here"
(Brings a smile every time)

Favorite place in Iowa (besides JLC): Chichaqua Bottom Greenbelt, Elkhart, Iowa
