This place is like a page off a fairytale! My boys and I stayed at Srdjan's Denbelija for a week and we totally chilled out. We spent days in the sun, lying in his garden hammocks and his neighbour who is a chef, prepared all our dinners for us and we were so lucky to enjoy Serbia's delicacies and specialty dishes, home cooked and delivered to our outdoor dining table. What a treat!
Srdjan's was very welcoming and accommodating - when we arrived, dinner had already been prepared. The house was as described, and Srdjan went out of his way to help us schedule horseback riding lessons nearby. I recommend Dembelija to anyone else staying in the area.
Srdjan and his wife were amazing, greeting us kindly after a long snowy drive from Sarajevo with some of their Rakija (fruit-based alcohol, popular in the Balkans), homemade pastries, home-smoked meats, cheese, and fruit. They were extremely kind and the apartment is cozy, they started a fire for us before we arrived.
Srdjan and Biljana were such kind and courteous hosts. Dembelija a beautiful property on a quiet street, and they did their best to make us feel accommodated from showing us around the small village of Bacevac (and surrounding Barajevo) to let us know where stores and restaurants were to sharing their Serbian Easter traditions with us! Both me and my friend that I stayed with would definitely stay at Dembelija again - it was really nice to be in this wonderful village that, at the same time, is quite close to Belgrade!
The words that come to mind regarding my stay in Dembelija are the following: authentic beauty, tame nature, gentle air, the artistic flair of the hosts, ethnic charm, loving care for the premises... However, what is also present is a certain magic, the tenderness of the Serbian countryside, the charm of the Balkan soul and the soothing quality of the preserved ethnic art and architecture. The small but lovely park surrounding the house will heal your worn urban senses. The old but thick with history wooden furniture in the house will remind you that beauty outlasts all else. The fine and carefully chosen ethnic elements such as the carmine red rugs and the white embroidered curtains will tell you the story of a proud, noble people, who have known defeat but choose endurance. The curved hills of the village of Bacevac will narrate the tale of a land which returns to its roots to nurse its historical wounds. Should you choose to wonder about the Balkans, and especially about Serbia, come to Dembelija (a mythological land of plenty) and fill your senses with the loveliness of a home cherished and a land treasured. I thank the hosts for sharing their spirit unselfishly. I tip my hat to a story of a dignified and proud Serbia narrated by Dembelija.
