This is a lovely house on the bank of the Mekong River. One of the few locations in Thailand that has a view to the West over Laos offering exciting sunsets. The area is peaceful and quiet. Surrounding the house is a pleasant lime orchard. Check out my youtube video showing the house and surroundings. "Teakwood House on Mekong River"

Place is very comfortable and beautiful. A little slice of heaven. Staff is very nice and the host is fantastic and went above and beyond helping us plan our trip. Host can provide pick up and drop off from train station. He even let his driver drop us off in places in the city to be sure we found our way. The house is a bit from the city Center in a wonderful setting by the Mekong and surrounded by a variety of trees (we left with a bag of limes!). He knows the city and country very well - great suggestions of things to do. Excellent conversationalist! We loved our time there and are already planning a return trip!

Thank you Sarah and P'Oay for your great review. Your stay was far too short, so I look forward to your visit next year for the next Bong Fai Piyanak festival.

I have to tell you that I had a wonderful 4 weeks here. I got quite attached to MY little teak house and got quite emotional about leaving it. I have no idea what I was doing looking at Airbnb in Nong Khai in the first place, but upon seeing it I was hooked. My aim was to stay somewhere in Thailand I could chill but also do some volunteer work as a teacher in a small country school. The village is full of very friendly Thais, good food and a good bike ride to the market and "regular shop" for those bits and bobs like bread that you didn't find in the village. Richard was a great host and very helpful. His little teak house was perfect - bed really comfortable, good wifi, bathroom very functional (good shower) as was the kitchenette that had everything required to whip up a meal if wanting to eat in. Lovely outlook in all directions. The activity along the riverside - especially fish farms - kept my camera busy. Well ventilated house to catch the breeze off the river. I never used the aircon the whole time I was there, as I prefer the ceiling fans, but often didn't even need them. Highly recommended.

I have always trusted the reviews on Airbnb, and this booking is no exception. Richard's place is wonderful: exactly as described and worth the raves from previous travelers. In fact, I ventured to Northern Thailand just to stay at Richard's property. Further, Richard is a gem: a gracious host and a wonderful conversationalist. I chose this home, for three weeks, as a space to inspire my work on a book. Both the house and Nong Khai were, indeed, inspirational. Just wait until you see those Mekong sunsets! Things to know: The home is about 8 km from town, and while Richard has a driver, I found it easier to rent a scooter and come and go without having to negotiate the confusion that comes with translation. For a motorbike rental, I suggest Mr. Noi (200B/day, no passport needed). A Trip Advisor search should yield more information on how to find him at his downtown location. Richard lives in a private home on the property, as does a local Thai family that works for Richard. The family was nice. Not only did I share in some meals with them (and learn a bit of Thai), but they take care of cleaning your home and laundry almost daily. Great air conditioners, though note there is no air in the front room with window views of the river (not a huge deal, but it was quite hot mid-day). You receive 12 bottles or so of water upon check-in (I even received another case in my last week), as well as a host of additional amenities, from coffee to a cake stand and other kitchen basics, from multiple towels to lines and traditional Thai garb (pakama?), from a library of books to puzzles and cozy home decor, and I was lucky enough to have access to Richard's hot tub. I highly recommend the nearby Park and Pool Resort for a luxury swim: 70B/day, 30B/towel. Best massage, hands down, is with Dr. Chow Chow at Healthy Garden in downtown Nong Khai (Internet search should assist with location). He knows what he’s doing—and for 170B! Several “must” AIR CONDITIONED (!) cafes in Nong Khai: Ma de’Ra, Baan Tuad, Cake at Toey’s, Doi Chaang, and Beyond Café. For a café closer to the property, I suggest Natit Coffee and Crafts. Finally, if you’re looking for a Western meal, look no further than Italian at Oasi. Best pizza in Asia, I’m sure of it! You will read rave reviews for Jing Joe’s Western fare, but I was unimpressed. Finally, you will need to hand over your passport upon arrival, which is immediately returned. Again, it was a beautiful, productive stay. I hope to return one day. Thank you, Richard and homestead family!
