We loved the cave house - a cosy, relaxing and quirky cave in the beautiful village of Monsanto. We stayed for four nights and could have stayed longer. The village with its houses built into the boulders is incredible. Great cafes and restaurants, wonderful walks along Roman roads to other idyllic villages and a swim in the dam nearby. Our host Antonio was so very, very helpful and went out of his way to accommodate us. A fantastic place, and wonderful memories - a must see, must go place.

We loved our stay. Lots to see, but without the crowds. The hike up to castle is well it. Host is great and has lots of suggestions for the area!

If you are looking for a unique, quaint place in an equally unique, quaint town, this is it! For a small town, Monsanto has a lot of history and interesting sites to see. António is a great host who will answer all of your questions and give you great tourist tips. We loved our stay!

Staying in a cave certainly made our visit to Monsanto quite spectacular. The photos are very accurate and the room was very comfortable with air conditioning and a fan. The Wifi did not work, which is not uncommon according to Antonio. There is a lovely garden below the Cave to enjoy the sunset an Antonio did offer to let us use the porch of his house (next door) to enjoy a supper that we bought earlier. He provided many informational brochures about the area and personally knows a lot about architecture. Antonio goes above and beyond to be helpful.

Best cave ever! Not that I've slept in a lot of caves, but this one is great. It's not so much a full-fledged natural cave as a stone house built under an enormous boulder, but let's not quibble. The town of Monsanto is gorgeous, there are amazing views of the valley (especially around sunset), and if you walk around at night you'll be amazed how quiet it is. On a warm night there might be other people out and about in the village, but the only sounds are a few dogs barking somewhere off in the distance. There are some nice cafes and restaurants in the village, and it's just a short (uphill) walk to the castle that overlooks the village. This is a great place to see and experience centuries of Portugal's history. And António was an excellent host, too. He showed us everything we needed to know about the house, told us about the town, recommended places to go nearby, and even drove us around a little to show us some things we would have missed otherwise. There isn't a kitchen in the cave house, but he told us we could use the refrigerator in his own house if we needed to keep anything cool. One other important fact about the cave house -- it DOES have air conditioning. I wasn't expecting that, based on my other travels in Europe, but this part of Portugal gets hot, so it was a nice surprise!

We cannot thank Antonio enough for being such a generous and gracious host. We appreciated everything he did for us, especially the guided tour of some local ancient sites on our last day. Monsanto has been one of the highlights of our Portugal adventure. The "Cave" is truly unique - you'll never stay in anything quite like it!

This is a rare find. Just a room and bathroom, no kitchen, but an awesome place to stay within Monsanto. It is a special feeling, and you can use an amazing outside terrace with such a view! The host was beyond helpful, even helping us get our too-big rented car through the tiny streets on Monsanto safely. It was great, I wish we could have stayed longer.
