The town of Bolsena is well equipped with bars, restaurants and shops. Lake Bolsena provides everything for those in search of a different kind of holiday, a complete return to nature and with generous, hospitable country people. A ride in a boat to draw along the unspoiled banks of the islands of Martana and Bisentina, fishing with the traditional nets (the fishing boats are very peculiar and always the same from a long time ago), skimming across the water on skis, these are just a few of the things to do when relaxing after a good meal of local specialities. Several small trattorias have sprouted along its banks, often in old renovated huts previously used by fishermen.
The town of Bolsena is part of the area known as the Alta Tuscia, which is one of the loveliest parts of central Italy. The area is of great natural beauty with wooded hills and open country, olive groves and vineyards as well as places of historical importance (Etruscan tombs, Roman remains, medieval hilltop villages and Renaissance palaces).
Tuscia is also known for the 'Via Francigena' (“Francigena Road”), an ancient religious itinerary from Canterbury to Rome. People travelled along this road, bringing with them their culture, emblems and languages, and even today many signs and memories of these journeys can still be found in this area.
A day trip to Rome, Sienna, Perugia and Florance is easily done by car or by train from Orvieto. Orvieto, with it's famous cathedral and Viterbo, with it's medieval town centre and it's papal palace, are only twenty minutes by car. Both cities are also nice for shopping. Nearby Bolsena, there are plenty of characteristic villages to visit going from Bolsena and following clockwise the panorama road: Montefiascone, with the most beautiful view of the lake, Marta, main and active fishermen's port, Capodimonte, on the picturesque promontory leaning forward the lake, Valentano, with its wide view dominating the lake, Gradoli, on a tufo buttress inside the crateral enclosure, Grotte di Castro, keep the beauty of the medieval structure, San Lorenzo Nuovo, the excellent example of a eighteenth century's town-planning.

We are a Dutch couple in our sixties. Professionaly we are working in the field of criminology and psycology. We always loved Italy, the Italian way of life, the cultrure and history, and ofcourse the Italian kitchen. That's why we bought our Bolsena house ten years ago. Now we made it our home and enjoy it with friends and family. Even our grandchildren love it, as it is only a five minute walk to the beautiful lake. We would like other people to get to now the medieval village, the region and the beautiful cities that can easily be reached from Bolsena. And last but not least our beautifull house.
