Enjoy the privacy of our tiny home, hand-crafted and constructed with all the essential amenities for your stay in Berkeley. Enjoy the garden which occasionally has produce to share and say hello to one of our silly and curious backyard chickens. Conveniently located close to BART (subway) and UC Berkeley.
You’ve probably heard of them by now – tiny house hand-built on trailers by people audacious enough to imagine a new way of housing ourselves. For some reason they have struck a chord. Maybe it’s because they fulfill every child’s fantasy of playing fort. Maybe because small really is beautiful, the divine does hang out in the details, and despite the promise of more, the burden of stuff only drags us down. Whatever the personal appeal, here is your chance to try tiny house living for yourself, all during your stay in the Bay Area.
Built by our co-host, Jan, who has lived in a tiny house half this size for over two years, and tucked away in the beautiful backyard of Jesse and Monica (previously Megan and David), this tiny house is a stunning example of hand-crafted, efficient, low-impact and deliberate living. (Thoreau, eat your heart out).
Our spacious yard has a delightful tiny house perfect for a trip (or longer stay) in the San Francisco Bay Area. A loft with a star-gazing skylight has one one queen-size memory foam mattress and one single mattress to sleep up to three people (although there is no partition).
The quaint quarters below include a sitting area, office, fold-out table, and a kitchen stocked with all the tools and staples you need to cook during your stay. (Just no microwave, oven, dishwasher or walk-in freezer.) The bathroom has an on-demand hot water shower with good water pressure and hand-built "Loveable loo" style composting toilet. (Don’t worry, you just do your business as usual, add a scoop of sawdust and we’ll take care of the rest.) Your shower and sink grey-water will keep our fruit trees thriving.
The house also has WiFi.

Our side fence opens up to a beautiful yard. In spring/summer the plum tree produces fruit you can pick up off the ground and eat. We also have various things growing throughout the year in our raised beds that you'll have access to.

Your hosts are a nice couple (and Jan who maintains the tiny house) who all know the area well. We will help orient you and get you set up, and after that, we are happy to give you all the space you need, but will remain accessible.
-- Local recommendations/knowledge
-- Food we are growing: If it's ripe and ready - we are happy to share, just ask.
-- Jan (tiny house architect) is often available to answer questions about the house, the practicalities and inspiration of tiny house living, or help get you situated. Between the three of us, we are always around and available if needed. We’re building a small library of tiny house-related books to satisfy your curiosity.
Weitere wichtige Infos
The tiny house has a propane stove and a local water heater. It is not hooked up to the sewer, so the gray water is used to water our trees and the toilet is composting. Composting toilets are environmentally friendly (don't use water) and do not smell. Think of it as a luxurious pioneering experience ;) Getting to the loft requires climbing a sturdy ladder, and unless you are four-and-a-half-feet tall, you can’t stand in the loft.
Feel free to come and go as you please, but respect that we live in a neighborhood with families and kids that need their sleep. The house cannot host parties.
Because the graywater goes to our plants, please only use the biodegradable soap/shampoo we provide.
No smoking inside the house. If outside - please throw all butts away.
Please no pets allowed except for ADA certified Service Animals.
Legalese: You will be given access to the Tiny House with the understanding that you are staying in a tiny house at your own risk. You are responsible for any damages or injuries incurred.
