Die Unterkunft
At one end of a large garden, abutting on the Mekong River, stands a swimming pool and pool house. It is a small two-storey abode with green shutters. The upper level is composed of a comfortable bedroom (6m x 4m) with a large king-size bed and its own en-suite bathroom (4m x 1.5m) with hot water shower and modern toilet. The view on the Mekong river from the bed is amazing. You will overlook through the windows at a lime tree, papaya trees and pineapples . The door opens on a small veranda where you can sit in the shade when the sun is too hot to use the deckchairs by the swimming pool.

Zugang für Gäste
Guests enjoy the whole upper level of the pool-house. The lower level of the pool-house is used for storage. The swimming pool and the garden are open to the guests. I am living in the main house located in the upper part of the garden at a distance from the pool-house.

History of the place: This residence was once the garden of Thit Keo Ta, literally translated from Lao as The Honorable Crystal Eyes who was the owner of this land adjacent to the village’s Buddhist monastery. He built a meditation pavilion in 1958 and planted few mango and tamarind trees. Every year he spent the three months of Buddhist Lent in this very simple pavilion to meditate and take part in the ceremonies with the monks next door. Thit Keo Ta was appointed head of the county council (Tasseng in Lao). He was a pious Buddhist and offered a beautiful, three-gable wooden Kuti or monks’ dwelling, to the village monastery in 1927. Visitors can still admire the Kuti today.
The today Crystal Eyes Garden is situated on the Mekong River bank between the monastery and the primary school of Ban Muang Khai. Ban Muang Khai is an old village that was once the river gate to the kingdom of Luang Prabang. In the past all boats had to stop at the village boat-landing to register and pay taxes. When Laos was reunified in the early 20th century, the village was no longer a compulsory stop on the river and lost its prosperity. Today, it is a peaceful rural village on the road to the Kuangsi waterfalls. Some visitors intending to visit the Kuangsi falls from Luang Prabang still land on the village’s sandy shore and then travel by car to the falls 20 minutes away.
After Thit Keo Ta passed away, the place was abandoned. Many teak trees were planted to make the garden more profitable. The meditation pavilion was falling in ruins and brambles were blocking the view to the Mekong when Francis decided to move from the town of Luang Prabang to this quiet place in 2007. After completing the landscaping, restoration of the old meditation pavilion, and construction of new buildings in the Lao colonial style, Francis moved into his new house in 2012. He has been living there permanently since, devoting a large part of his retirement life to the embellishment of the large garden overlooking the Mekong. This quiet retreat was also a favorable environment for writing several of his books and articles about Luang Prabang town which he frequents quite often.

The village is mainly inhabited by rice farmers. Luang Prabang town is 20 Km upstream Mekong from the village, going down a charming road winding through forest, rice paddies, small villages and hills. But the road is narrow and not always in good condition due to the tropical weather destructions. This means you must drive slowly and carefully, especially when trucks carrying Mekong sand for construction are using this road to deliver in town.

I am a writer and I used to work with UNESCO before retiring in this place. I would be happy to explain you in French or in English, the history of Luang Prabang and suggest you some places to visit.
I have 2 dogs. One is very friendly with visitors, the other one is easily afraid of newcomers and barks at the beginning, but keeps distances and never bite anybody.
