Our house is a typical French village house in a tiny quiet street in the village of Chalabre. The three storey house has been newly renovated and comfortably furnished and equipped to ensure our guests feel entirely at home.

Die Unterkunft
Our house is a very typical French village house complete with grapevine over the front door. It is three stories high with lovely views from the front and rear of the house over the surrounding countryside. A small bench at the front of the house is a great place to sit with your coffee and chat to the neighbours.
On the ground floor of the house you will find a well equipped modern kitchen, including a Nespresso machine, and a dining area that seats eight. On this floor there is also a utility room with a washer/dryer and plenty of storage room and coat hanging space.
Up the first flight of stairs you are in the main living area. The bathroom on the same floor has a shower over bath and looks out over the completely private small section of our neighbour, Chateau Chalabre's, garden which is accessible from the house and a lovely private area for our guests to enjoy. The bathroom is supplied with all the basics including soap, shower gel, shampoo and toilet paper.
Up another flight of stairs to the two bedrooms. The main bedroom has a queen sized bed and plenty of space to move around. At the rear of the house is a smaller lovely second bedroom. This room has a double bed and a view across the back deck into the small and very private section of the Chateau gardens and the village rooftops. Our beds all have comfortable down pillows and duvets and linen sheets.
From this floor you can access the rear deck. This is completely private with a nice view across the village and hills and is a great place to share a glass of wine in the evening.
The house is built of stone and the thick stone walls and double glazed windows throughout mean that summer and winter it is well insulated against the weather. For those visiting in the winter the house has ample heating.
Wifi is provided free of charge. The television is not internet accessible so guests wishing to access their own Netflix and Amazon and similar accounts should bring their own device. No free to air channels are provided. A DVD player, books and games are all in the house for at home entertainment.
The kitchen will always have enough supply of the basics for you to get started - oils, spices, sugar, tea and coffee.
It is possible to drive up to the front door but we recommend parking the car in the many free spaces available at the bottom of the street.
A one minute walk to the bottom of the street, and you are in town. There are two bars which serve lunch most days, a hotel which serves lunch and dinner, two butchers, a chemist, a bank, a post office, a florist and two grocery stores - a smaller Primeur for fresh fruit and vegetables, wines and cheeses and a large Carrefour Express. Every Saturday morning there is a small market in the main square.
Chalabre is a friendly medieval town with easy access to the Cathar castles, many great walks and bike rides, superb scenery, the amazing Lac de Montbel, and lots of things to see and taste and experience very close to the village.

Lage

Chalabre, Occitanie, Frankreich

Chalabre is a very friendly medieval village. Our house is in a street that leads to the (unused) gates of Chateau Chalabre. Because it is not a street leading anywhere except the closed gates it is very quiet. You are guaranteed to be greeted and made welcome by the neighbours. In fact it is hard to visit Chalabre without making a few new friends.
Within a minutes walk of the house you will find two bars which also serve lunch most days, the Hotel France which serves lunch and dinner, a bakery/patisserie, two butchers, three grocery stores, a pharmacy, bank, a newsagency/bakery and florist. Chalabre's market is every Saturday morning in Le Halle at the centre of the bastide.
Chalabre has three rivers running through it. We also have a small lake. The town offers lots of pretty walks and easy access to the Voie Verte to walk and cycle between Montsegur and the Canal du Midi. The area is magnificent for outdoor enthusiasts no matter what time of the year you visit.
Lac de Montbel is a few minutes drive away. In the summer you can swim, kayak, sail, and in the evenings dine and listen to music. In the winter the lake offers lots of walks and bike rides.
Chalabre is close to Mirepoix and Esperaza which both have larger excellent markets on Sundays and Mondays. Esperaza's dinosaur museum is also fun to visit. The prehistoric caves of Niaux where you can view the original drawings are also less than an hour from Chalabre.
Chalabre is surrounded by lots of pretty villages and of course all the Cathar Castles. It is about 45 minutes drive from Carcassone, where you can visit La Cite, the UNESCO World Heritage listed castle. Toulouse is about an hour and 20 minutes away. It is an easy day trip to the Mediterranean and further up into the Pyrenees and Andorra. In Ax-Les-Thermes, on the way to Andorra, the hot springs are open all year round. Our nearest ski stations are Camurac and Mont D'Olmes, both less than an hour away.

We are Australians who have retired to the "real" south of France. We often travel with our dogs, a 7 year old Briard and an almost 1 year oldBriard. We love travelling, food, cinema, and meeting people. At home in Chalabre we have the Pyrenees and Andorra on our doorstep. Spain and the Mediterranean coast are an easy drive. Vineyards, Cathar Castles, Lac de Montbel, walks and bike rides mean we are never short of something to do.
