Laguna Beach--no better place to be. Beautiful beaches. World class art festivals. Great restaurants. Live music. And then there is Bluebird Canyon, a little woodsy enclave--it's like you are in the country but you are near it all.
Currently the city of Laguna Beach has placed a "moratorium" on all short term rentals through AirBnB and similar websites. That is not to say you won't find them; they are just not "legal" for the time being. I consider that a great loss, because I really enjoyed hosting people from all over, and, for guests, it is really hard to find reasonable accommodations in a small beach town, and so many will be going elsewhere. Currently, only long term rentals of a month or longer are allowed. Other than that . . .
Laguna Beach is a lovely coastal town surrounded by hills and wilderness preserves. Bluebird Canyon is a little gem tucked away in the middle of it all, a woodsy, quiet canyon, with its own little ecosystem of vegetation, birds and wildlife. If it is cloudy at the beach, it is probably sunny here. Our street is a one lane road and we are at the end of it, so it is very private. If guests are not accustomed to narrow roads in hilly areas, we suggest they arrive in daylight to see how it is laid out. We are almost exactly 1 mile to the beach and town. The house is on 4 separate levels, built into the hillside – enter at the top level and it goes down from there. (NB: A house on a hillside will have stairs.)
This listing is the 1st of two rooms I am offering -- with views into the back garden and little canyon. Ordinary rooms, I'd say, but in an extraordinary spot. Basic, affordable accommodations, nothing fancy – so you can do whatever it is that you came to Laguna to do. The rooms are on the lowest level of the house, mostly separate from the rest of the house, with a separate entrance to that level. They each have a queen size bed. They share a bath.
Guests are provided towels and washcloths. The bathroom is stocked with all the basic necessary supplies.
On the same level with the rooms is a small kitchenette area, with a small fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and a table and chairs.
After checking in, guests are welcome to come and go as they please.
Also sharing the premises, in addition to myself, are two greyhounds, regal, docile and friendly beings, and a cat, the real boss. My kids are grown but live nearby, and they might show up.

Included are off-street parking, wi-fi, and a common kitchenette area with coffee maker, small fridge and microwave.
What I have in the way of beach chairs, umbrellas, and Boogie boards are available to guests.
Guests are welcome to use the lower gardens and patio where there are tables and chairs available.
Guests must park in their designated parking spots; it is important that access to the road is not blocked at any time, nor the neighbors inconvenienced. It is a hillside road and some consider it challenging.
I do welcome guests into the upper part of the house if I am home. One of my favorite parts about hosting is meeting people and hearing about what they do or where they have been. But that is entirely up to the guest. Guest privacy is very important. Guests have their own kitchenette area; kitchen privileges in the main kitchen are not provided. Laguna has just about every kind of restaurant imaginable, and a Trader Joe's and Whole Foods Market among others.
Since I work at home, any of my papers, files, computers are strictly off limits. The master bedroom is a strictly private area and off limits. Other guests' bedrooms are off limits.

I am an attorney, trying to be retired, but not succeeding very well at the retiring part. So I am still working quite a bit. I have an office in town, and work mostly from home. I will be available to guests, although I am in and out most of the time. I am happy to get to know you, hear about your travels, where you are from, what you do. Or if you are not so inclined that is fine too. I have lived here for more than 30 years. I will be happy to give recommendations on where to go, where to eat, how to get around, where to park, when is the best time for this and that, and can add a little history along with it, if you want.

At this point I have hosted on AirBnB for a couple of years. It is an enriching experience. I have really enjoyed it. The next best thing to traveling is just meeting people from all over.
A note about the AirBnB experience: AirBnB is a unique experience. It is appreciated by those who want something less ordinary, and who in general are a little more adventurous and flexible. It is not for everyone.
Note on "monthly rate." The monthly rate September -May it is $1300. The monthly rate for June, July and August is $1800.
I do not like to have lots of rules, other than to be courteous and considerate. Come and go as you please. Mostly it is just common sense and common courtesy. Absolutely, let me know if anything is not right or if there is anything you need or anything I can do. Other than that, keep in mind: It's a house, not a hotel. There is no daily maid service. It is not soundproofed as a hotel would be. Keep the sound down after hours and be tolerant of normal sound levels. Keep your belongings in your room. The bath is shared; leave it clean for the next person. Rinse off and shake out any sand before coming inside. There is no smoking in the house. And the gates must close AND latch each time because the greyhounds can run far and fast if they get out -- and you will be the one to chase them!

I am an attorney and live in Laguna Beach, CA. I have 3 grown kids. Whenever I can, I travel with my buddies -- who are the most interesting people you would ever want to meet. Hosting on AirBnB has been such an adventure, and a privilege, meeting the greatest people from all over.
