The Store in Hobo: a dog friendly reader/writer’s retreat in a renovated general store.

Formerly “Paul’s Grocery” from 1943-73, the Store is on the Bellevue Mill Circle hilltop, an eclectic neighborhood bordering historic downtown Hillsborough.

Whether you’re coming alone, with a friend or a small family, this comfy space will inspire creativity and provide serenity.

Need room for 2 more? See The Mill House in Hobo on AirBnB. On the same property and with kitchen. (No dogs in Mill House)

Die Unterkunft
The Store’s south facing, front door opens onto a private fenced yard bordered by trees, a sanctuary for guests and their four legged friends. A lighted outdoor deck with seating are yours to use.

A back door on the north end faces King Street. This is where you will park outside your entry door through the bike shed. You may want to store your bicycles in the shed during your stay.

The front room of the Store is a working space with writing desk and comfortable office chair on rollers at a south facing window. Attached to the writing studio/office is a bathroom with shower. You will find a closet to hang things off the studio/office space too.

The main living area includes a comfortable queen bed. Across from the queen bed a day bed sits under west facing windows, a perfect place to read or nap.

The queen bed sleeps two very comfortably while a third guest can enjoy the daybed. Should you have a fourth person sharing the space, the sofa works for a night or two.

The store retains the original Warm Morning gas heater for colder seasons and has the ambience of a fireplace. A wall mounted mini-split AC quietly keeps the place as cool as you like in the summer.

The entire space is tastefully decorated, very comfy, and filled with historic charm characteristic of this small, hip Southern town along with the owner’s love of his Minnesota, Michigan, and Great Lakes roots.

Zugang für Gäste
Enjoy the back yard on the west side of the Store and the back deck attached to my house. These are common spaces shared with guests who may be staying in the Mill House. Please be respectful of others and their privacy as they are of you and yours.

Weitere wichtige Hinweise
Plenty of hot water from the Store’s own hot water heater.

Quiet and cool as you like space with wall mounted Mini-split AC.

Goldfinches, Cardinals, Bluebirds, Orioles, Carolina Wrens and more to see on the feeders out your windows near the west side of the backyard.

West Hillsborough grew around two historic textile mills both renovated into interesting lofts and business spaces. A community of mill employees and their families lived in the small turn of the century houses around the mills and called this neighborhood home as you will call and feel too staying in the Store.

The Store helped provide a sense of community to those families by serving their everyday needs from 1943-73. It now serves as respite and retreat space for your creative writing, reading, and just being needs.

The Store, located in the Bellvue Mill Circle neighborhood on Webb Street, sits at the top of the Nash Street hill just north of the fabulously restored Bellvue Mill Apartments & Lofts.

This friendly and diverse neighborhood offers young and old families, retired couples, hipsters, dog lovers, and folks of all stripes an enjoyable, peaceful place to plant their gardens ands roots, walk to the public library, and drink in the rich tastes and sights of this lovely, quirky and inspiring community you may call home too.

A native Minnesotan, I have been in the Hillsborough/Chapel Hill/Durham area since 1985. I enjoy being outdoors. watching a good storm roll in, and winter's solitude found in my native north. I am always up for a road trip to see what's around the next corner and hear the stories of people and their places. I believe in Place, Community, Partnership, Service, Solitude, and Good Hot Coffee. I also believe in Hygge, that Danish culture quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that nurtures the feelings of contentment and well-being. You will find hygge in the cozy comfort of this west Hillsborough general store turned into a creative retreat in the sanctuary of a green back yard. Two blocks from the Riverwalk along the Eno, The Store is a short walk to downtown restaurants, CupaJoe, Wooden Nickel Pub, Nomad, Purple Crow Books, Hillsborough Public Library, and Weaver Street Market Coop. It’s an even shorter one block walk south down the Nash Street hill past restored Bellvue Mill to Hillsborough BBQ, Nash Street Tavern, Napoli Pizza, and Whippet's Frozen Custard.

Während deines Aufenthaltes
The Store is in a fenced backyard bordered by tall trees with all the privacy you want or need. As your host I am available by text, and sometimes in person when not in Minnesota, should you need directions in town or to the cities of Durham and Chapel Hill, an easy drive east and south of Hillsborough, or “Hobo,” as locals affectionately say.

Restaurant recommendations for finer dining are Antonia’s or Panciuto; add in a pub lover's pub, The Wooden Nickel, and you are off to a good start to your enjoyment of downtown Hobo on Churton Street.
