The Icehouse is a unique house situated in the High Peaks. Surrounded by a stunning private wilderness, yet close to the village of Upper Jay and within easy reach of Whiteface Mt (6 mins), Keene &Keene Valley (10/15 mins) and Lake Placid (20 mins).
The Icehouse is surrounded by nearly a thousand acres of privately owned land that only our guests will have access to, and offers miles of completely private hiking trails leading into the forests and up into the mountains that belong to the house.
It is located near Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort (less than 6 miles), which was given 7th place in a recent CNN report on the World's best 100 ski runs, 10 minutes from Keene and 15 from Keene Valley, and only 15-20 minutes by car from Lake Placid. We think it's close enough to all the local attractions and amenities while still maintaining a safe distance to everyday-life!
The historic 19th century property derives its name from its original purpose. It was built to store blocks of ice in the Summer that had been cut in the Winter from the nearby ponds. The ice blocks were in the cool rooms of a nearby Great Camp (and probably ended up in the odd cocktail there...).
The building has been lovingly restored over the past few years and transformed into a spacious home with a welcoming and warm atmosphere. Many original features have been conserved, and contemporary additions were carefully planned. Using mostly reclaimed local wood and ecologically sourced materials to create a comfortable and unique living space, the inside has been decorated to combine old and new in harmonious ways. Thus we offer guests the experience of simple cabin-living in the Adirondack wilderness in really rather comfortable style. We even recently caved in and now have a very good airconditioning unit for those hot Adirondack Summer nights!
Great care has gone into every little detail: from the hand-cut red hardwood flooring in parts of the building and the custom-made windows set into the original wood-panelled walls, to the sheepskin-rug on the Adirondack rocking chair by the antique fireplace, or the very high-quality bedding on the comfortable beds; from the professional-grade cooker to the family-size stainless steel fridge in the kitchen - everything has its own aesthetic and functional purpose and contributes to the simple, intimate and warm atmosphere of the building.
The kitchen is well equipped with a high-end coffee maker, Nespresso milk foamer, toaster, kettle, waffle iron, ice cream maker, kitchen aid blender; excellent pots, pans and all other necessities for cooking and baking. There is a Weber barbecue grill right outside, and a lovely open fire pit in our nearby field with truly wonderful views.
Upper Jay is a fabulous small village right in the middle of the High Peaks region - we think the most beautiful area of the Adirondacks. There is a boutique dairy and artisan cheesemaker in town with a small and well-stocked farm shop as well as a great little library, post office, etc - we also have regular concerts and plays at the unique and funky 'Recovery Lounge' (upholstery business by day, cool venue by night) as well as the former local church. Luckily, most traffic to Lake Placid and the North bypasses us, so it's pretty quiet (unless it's the Ironman weekend!) yet conveniently located.
We will gladly supply you with fresh eggs, coffee and milk upon arrival, and our wonderful caretakers Sue and Carl can help you get settled in - if you have any special requirements, please just let us know and we'll all do our very best to accommodate them.
We have an extensive guest info pack that will help you find your way around the house (well, you won't get lost, that's for sure!), and that includes directions as well as some background on the area, where to eat, shop, etc etc. It's an ever-growing list!
Please note that family discounts are available for those with small children.

Most of the time we live in Oxford, UK, as we both work here and in London, but we do try and spend as much time as we can at our lovely house in the Adirondacks in New York State...We let both houses from time to time to people we hope will appreciate them. We're both academics with a great love of traveling, exploring, making, creating, painting, building, digging, walking, talking, swimming, eating, laughing and (not) being masters of the chaos that reigns our lives.
